The familiar click of the apartment door unlocking barely reached Shoto's ears over the quiet hum of the heater. He had been sitting on the couch with a book resting open in his lap, more pretending to read than actually turning the pages. It was late enough that the city outside had settled into a sea of scattered lights, and he already knew the event had run longer than expected. Hero galas always did. Too many interviews, too many conversations, too many people expecting smiles that had to last far longer than anyone's energy ever could.

The door opened.

Their footsteps were slow.

Not injured. Not limping. Just... heavy.

Shoto looked up almost immediately. It wasn't difficult to tell. Living together had taught him that exhaustion wasn't always physical. Sometimes it settled somewhere deeper, hidden behind quiet eyes and sluggish movements. Their shoulders were tense beneath their coat, their expression distant, as if every conversation they'd forced themselves through still clung to them. They closed the door with a soft click and simply stood there for a moment, staring at nothing.

Social battery.

Gone.

"...Long day?" Shoto asked softly.

They only gave a small, tired hum in response.

That was enough.

He closed his book without another word and stood, crossing the room at an unhurried pace. There was no need to ask what happened. No need to press for details while their mind was still tangled in the echoes of crowded rooms and endless voices. If they wanted to tell him later, they would. Right now, they looked as though speaking itself required too much effort.

Before they could even shrug off their coat, Shoto gently slipped it from their shoulders and draped it over the nearest chair. His fingers brushed briefly against theirs, cool against warm, before his gaze settled back on their face.

"You don't have to say anything." It was simple. An invitation more than reassurance.

Then, he opened his arms.

It was almost amusing how quickly they moved.

The distance between them disappeared in an instant, as though their body had made the decision before their mind could. They stepped forward and practically melted against him, burying their face into the front of his shirt with a quiet sigh that seemed to carry the weight of the entire evening. Every ounce of tension they'd been holding onto began slipping away the second his arms wrapped securely around them.

Shoto's embrace was steady. Firm enough that they felt held. Gentle enough that they never felt trapped.

Just perfect.

His chin rested lightly atop their head as one hand settled between their shoulder blades, slowly tracing absent-minded circles through the fabric of their clothes. The other rested comfortably around their waist, keeping them close without a hint of hesitation. He didn't rush them. Didn't tease them. Didn't fill the silence with unnecessary words.

He simply stayed.

He understood more than most people realized.

Despite becoming a professional hero, despite the cameras, interviews and public appearances that came with his name, Shoto had never stopped preferring quiet over noise. He knew what it felt like to have too many voices demanding pieces of your attention until there was nothing left to give. Home had become precious because it asked nothing from either of them.

No reporters. No fans.

Just this.

Just each other.

They barely noticed themselves leaning even more of their weight against him, exhaustion finally winning over the effort of pretending to be functional. Another quiet breath escaped them, muffled against his chest.

Shoto smiled.

Almost impossible to notice.

The kind of smile reserved for moments no one else was meant to witness.

Without thinking, the warmth from his left side spread ever so slightly through the embrace, careful and controlled. Just enough to chase away the lingering chill they'd carried home from outside. Never hot enough to be noticeable. Just... comforting.

He felt them relax almost immediately.

"...Better?" he murmured.

Their answer was another sleepy little hum.

He didn't need anything more.

After a long moment, he gently guided them toward the couch without ever letting go, settling down first before encouraging them to curl up against him however they pleased. They did so without resistance, practically folding into his side as though they'd rehearsed this countless times before. One arm remained securely around their shoulders while the other reached for the blanket draped over the back of the couch, pulling it over both of them.

The apartment fell silent again. Not awkward. Just.. comfortable.

The kind of silence that only existed between people who understood each other well enough to know words weren't always necessary.

Shoto rested his cheek lightly against the top of their head.

"You worked hard today," he said quietly. "...You don't have to anymore."

No expectations. No conversations to carry.

Only the soft rhythm of breathing, the quiet warmth of home, and the comforting certainty that whenever the world drained every last bit of energy from them, there would always be someone waiting with open arms to help them find it again.
