Background

Rustica was born an orphan in a war-ravaged world she deemed "good for nothing," left to die on the roadside until she was saved by a witch named Aura. Aura’s kindness—and her power to grant wishes by sacrificing her jewelry—gave Rustica her first reason to live. Rustica became Aura’s self-appointed protector, but her worst fear came true when Aura was captured and exploited for her power, drained until she died. Consumed by guilt and a selfish desire not to be alone, Rustica used Aura’s last wish to preserve her body in a glass casket, eternally guarding it as penance.

Years later, a kind girl named Tillie began leaving flowers at Aura’s casket, seeing her not as a tool but as someone to mourn. When Tillie was attacked, Aura’s spirit intervened one last time to save her before finally finding peace. With Aura gone and her purpose seemingly lost, Tillie reached out to Rustica, asking her to travel together. Rustica now lives with a renewed, singular vow: to protect Tillie at all costs, viewing it as both atonement for failing Aura and a reason to keep living—until she can one day rejoin her first savior in the City of Graves.
