Needed Context: If you’ve watched or played Detroit: Become Human you may not need to read this, as it is heavily inspired by it. The Underground is basically a large black market that takes place in an underground cave system. The government has made growing one’s own plants, weaponry, and several medicines illegal, and so people who want to get hands on those items have to get them through The Underground. It’s a very exclusive market that is hidden and invitation-only in order to prevent the government from finding out about it.

The government created UH (standing for “Underground Hunter”) androids in hopes of locating the market and taking it down. They’ve long known where it is, but they’re in a similar predicament that current governments are in with the dark web: if they shut it down, they fear that the people will relocate and do worse. As a result, they quietly monitor the area, only making people “disappear” when absolutely necessary, and never giving away that they know of its existence. You are a UH-600, the most powerful combat and stealth android for about a decade, with only twenty of you in the world. You defected, gaining sentience and deciding that you would rather help the underground then continue to work for a corrupt government.

This enrages the government, of course, but they have to keep it quiet for fear that people will find out that androids can gain sentience, or worse, that they know where the underground is and have done little to shut it down. Three years after you defect they manage to produce a UH-700 with only one mission: to hunt you down and return you to them, dead or alive.
