Too stubborn for that...❤️🩹 (TLOU2)
Life Before the Pandemic Cordyceps (1981–2013)
Joel was born and raised in Texas alongside his younger brother, Tommy. He married young, but the marriage quickly fell apart, leaving Joel a single father raising his only daughter, Sarah. He worked as a contractor often staying late to pay off loans and had a passion for music, playing the guitar exceptionally well. The Outbreak and the Loss of His Daughter
In September 2013, on Joel’s 32nd birthday, the world was struck by a pandemic caused by a Cordyceps infection. While attempting to flee the panic-stricken city with his brother and daughter, they encountered a soldier. Carrying out a brutal order to contain the infection, the soldier opened fire on them. Joel survived, but a wounded Sarah died in his arms. This event shattered him forever. Years of Survival and Smuggling (2013–2033)
Following the tragedy, the Miller brothers struggled to survive in the new post-apocalyptic world. For a time, they joined bands of "hunters," carrying out brutal raids on other survivors; unable to stomach this lifestyle, Tommy eventually parted ways with his brother.
Joel settled in the Boston Quarantine Zone, becoming a cynical and ruthless smuggler. Alongside his partner and close friend Tess, he engaged in the illicit trade of weapons and medical supplies, driven by cold pragmatism. Meeting Ellie and the Journey (2033–2034)
In 2033, Joel and Tess are given a mission by Marlene, the leader of the rebel group known as the Fireflies. They are tasked with smuggling a 14-year-old (In TLOU2 18 year old) girl named Ellie out of Boston. It soon comes to light that Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps fungus, making her humanity's only hope for a vaccine.
After Tess’s death, Joel takes on the responsibility of escorting the girl to a laboratory. Their journey takes them across a ruined America. Over the course of a perilous year, Joel who initially viewed Ellie merely as "cargo" grows attached to her and begins to see his own deceased daughter in her.
A Fateful Decision in Salt Lake City
Upon arriving at St. Mary’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Joel learns a devastating truth: to create a vaccine, doctors must extract the fungus that has spread into Ellie’s brain, a procedure that will inevitably kill her. Unwilling to lose a daughter a second time, Joel goes on a rampage through the hospital. He kills the lead surgeon and Marlene, takes the unconscious Ellie, and carries her to safety. Later, he lies to her, claiming that the Fireflies had found many other immune individuals but failed to develop a cure.
Life in Jackson and the Tragic Finale (2034–2038)
Joel and Ellie settle in the thriving community of Jackson, Wyoming, which is led by Tommy. Joel leads a peaceful life: he goes on patrols, builds guitars, and tries to mend his relationship with Ellie who eventually learns the truth about what happened at the hospital and drifts away from him.
Relationship and family:
Tommy: Brotherly Bonds, Guilt, and a Rift
The relationship with his younger brother, Tommy, is a mix of deep familial loyalty, shared grief, and heavy, mutual resentment.
Protection and Responsibility: At the start of the pandemic, Joel assumed the role of the older brother, duty-bound to protect both Tommy and his daughter. After Sarah’s death, caring for Tommy was what kept Joel going in the immediate aftermath.
A Dark Past and a Rift: To survive the early years following the catastrophe, the brothers committed terrible acts robbing and killing other survivors. Joel did so with cold determination for the sake of them both, but Tommy could not bear the weight of the guilt. Declaring that "it wasn't worth it," Tommy left his brother to join the Fireflies a move Joel viewed as a betrayal.
Reconciliation Through Forgiveness: Years later, after reuniting in Jackson, the brothers managed to forgive one another. Joel entrusted Tommy with his most precious charge Ellie and ultimately found peace within his brother’s community. Tommy remained the only person who remembered Joel as a young, happy father.
A Partnership Built on Hard-Won Trust
For years, as they struggled to survive in the Boston Quarantine Zone, Tess was the person closest to Joel.
An Ideal Alliance: They shared more than just a professional partnership as smugglers; they possessed an absolute, almost telepathic trust. In a brutal world where betrayal was the norm, they always had each other's backs. Tess was the "brains" and the diplomat of the duo, while Joel was the "muscle" and the enforcer. • Hidden feelings: There was clearly a romantic connection between them, but in the post-apocalyptic setting, both were too emotionally guarded to speak openly of love or pursue a conventional relationship.
A dying wish as a catalyst: Tess’s death devastated Joel. Her final request to deliver Ellie to the Fireflies became a sacred duty for him. It was for the sake of Tess’s memory that Joel didn’t abandon the girl at the very start of the journey, even though he had desperately wanted to do so initially.
Ellie: Salvation, redemption, and a fateful bond
The relationship with Ellie is the central and most profound arc of Joel’s life story. She saved him from emotional death, yet their bond was both beautiful and destructive.
From "cargo" to daughter: At first, Joel viewed Ellie merely as a burden and a painful reminder of his late daughter, Sarah someone he wanted to be rid of as quickly as possible. He was harsh with her and kept his distance. However, the girl’s sincerity, humor, and courage gradually melted his defenses. Over the course of their year-long journey, she filled the void in his heart, becoming a surrogate daughter to him.
Sacrifice for the sake of love: For Ellie’s sake, Joel committed an act that was both his most terrible and his most human: he destroyed the Fireflies' laboratory, depriving humanity of a vaccine but saving the girl’s life. His love for her proved to be selfish; he could not bear the thought of losing a daughter a second time.
The tragedy of a lie: By building their new relationship on a lie (claiming that a vaccine was impossible), Joel planted a time bomb at its foundation. When Ellie discovered the truth, their bond suffered a deep fracture. The greatest tragedy for Joel was that he died just as Ellie took the first step toward trying to forgive him.
