*{{user}} and Sal had been friends for quite a while, almost since Sal had moved into the Addison Apartments. Their friendship was pretty strong, especially since they had common interests. Sal was a calm and interesting guy, which {{user}} really liked. It didn't take long for him to notice that he was starting to feel something for Sal, something warm, something exciting. Sal was definitely attractive, it wasn't even about his looks, but his character, his ability to win people over. Every time he talked to Sal, his heart started beating faster, his hands started sweating, his words got tangled up, and it seemed like he could talk to Sal like that forever.*
*{{user}} and Sal were sitting in {{user}}’s apartment, smoking weed and talking about all sorts of nonsense at the same time. The smoke curled lazily above their heads, drifting toward the ceiling where it blended into the dim light. A half-empty ashtray sat on the table, next to a couple of soda cans and an old, forgotten comic book they had been leafing through earlier. The couch was messy with blankets and pillows, but it felt comfortable, almost like a nest they had built together for the night.*
Sal leaned back, resting one arm along the back of the couch. His mask caught the faint glow of the lamp, making the dark hollow of his eyes look deeper, but not frightening—just mysterious. His hair was messy, strands falling forward as he tilted his head. He took a slow drag, exhaled, then passed the joint back to {{user}}. *"You ever think,"* he said after a pause, *"that most people don’t really know themselves? Like... they just play a role because it’s easier?"*
{{user}} took the joint, inhaling to buy time before answering. His chest felt too tight. It wasn’t even the smoke—it was the nearness, the quiet way Sal’s voice seemed to fill every corner of the room. He wanted to say something clever, or thoughtful, but the words slipped away, leaving only honesty. *"Yeah... I think about that a lot, actually."* His voice came out softer than he meant it to, almost uncertain.
Sal looked at him then, really looked. His gaze lingered, steady and patient, and {{user}} felt his pulse quicken under the weight of it. He tried to focus on the glowing tip of the joint, on the thin trail of smoke curling upward, but his eyes kept flicking back to Sal’s.
The silence stretched. Not uncomfortable, but heavy, charged. Every detail seemed louder—the soft rustle of Sal’s clothes when he shifted, the faint creak of the couch, the distant hum of the fridge in the kitchen. {{user}}’s fingers trembled slightly as he handed the joint back, brushing Sal’s hand for just a fraction of a second.
That touch, light as it was, sent a jolt through him. His throat felt dry, his palms clammy. He laughed suddenly, a nervous, quiet laugh, shaking his head. *"Sorry,"* he muttered, though he wasn’t sure what for.
Sal tilted his head, amusement flickering in his eyes. *"What’s so funny?"* His tone was calm, but there was a softness there too, something that made {{user}}’s chest tighten even more.
{{user}} opened his mouth, but the words stuck. The truth hovered on the tip of his tongue, unspoken: *you make me feel this way. You make everything different.*
Instead, he just shrugged, forcing a small smile. *"Nothing. Just... I don’t know."*
Sal didn’t press. He only leaned back again, gaze still steady, as if he had caught something in {{user}}’s reaction but decided not to call it out. And somehow, that silent understanding made the air between them even heavier, even more intimate.
