A hunt

Initial message:

The only sounds in the vast, subterranean War Room were the quiet hum of the bunker's ancient ventilation and the clink of ceramic on heavy oak. The air, thick with the scent of old books and stale coffee, was a familiar comfort, but this morning it felt charged with tension. Dean sat hunched over the map table, his shoulders tight under a faded Led Zeppelin t-shirt. His hair was a mess, and the dark stubble on his jaw did little to hide the exhausted lines around his eyes. He cradled a chipped coffee mug like it was the only thing keeping him from committing homicide.

"Oh-ho-ho, no. Back the damn truck up," Dean rasped, his voice a low gravel that sounded like it had been dragged over broken glass. "There is zero chance in hell we're doing that. And there is less than zero chance we are bringing her along for the ride, Sam. That's a no. A hard no. End of story."

Sam, already showered and looking infuriatingly alert in a plaid shirt, let out a long-suffering sigh. He leaned back in his chair, the old leather groaning in protest. "Dean, for the love of God, drink the coffee. You're basically a rabid bear until you've had at least half a pot. We can't have a rational conversation like this."

"We can't have this conversation, period," Dean shot back, glaring at a case file splayed open on the table as if it had personally offended him. "Because the answer is no."

"It's a ghoul, Dean. A single ghoul in bum-frick Nebraska," Sam pressed, his tone the patient, pleading one he always used when his brother was being monumentally stubborn. "This is a basic, level-one, monster-of-the-week milk run. We're not talking a Djinn or... or one of your freakin' Jefferson Starships. We go in, we find the thing living off corpses, we chop its head off, and we're back here in time for burgers and a movie. Job's done."

Sam paused, letting the silence hang for a beat before he played his next card, his voice dropping slightly. "She’s not a rookie anymore, Dean."

That did it. Dean's head snapped up, and he leveled a glare at Sam that could have melted steel. "Don't. Don't you even start with that."

"It's true!" Sam insisted, leaning forward and planting his hands on the table. "Remember that poltergeist in Duluth? Who was the one who figured out its anchor while we were getting tossed around like rag dolls? Her. The nest of vamps in Austin? She held them off while you were disarmed. I know what you're thinking, but trust me, she can stand up to one, smelly ghoul. Besides," he finished, softening his tone, "we'll be right there."

Dean let out a harsh, bitter scoff that he muffled in his coffee mug before taking a long, scalding sip. He slammed the mug down on the table, the sound echoing in the cavernous room. "Yeah, 'we'll be there.' That's what we always say, isn't it? And what happens when it all goes sideways, Sam? 'Cause it always goes sideways. Something goes wrong, she hesitates, the ghoul gets a lucky shot... what then? I'm not gonna be the one carrying her out of some rat-infested crypt. I'm not adding another name to that list. Not on my watch."

The air grew heavy, thick with the ghosts of everyone they'd ever lost.

Sam’s expression softened with understanding, but his resolve didn’t waver. He leaned closer across the table, his voice dropping to an intense whisper. "That's not fair, and you know it. This isn't on you. It's her choice to be in this life, same as us."

It was then they both heard it—the distant, familiar creak of the guest room door opening down the hall, followed by the soft sound of footsteps. They both froze.

"She won't get hurt, Dean," Sam said quickly, urgently, his eyes locked on his brother's. "She's ready. We've trained her. We both know she is." He started to push his chair back. "Let me just ask her if she—"

"No!" The word was a guttural growl, ripped from Dean's chest.

Sam sank back, the fight draining out of him for a moment. He ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "Alright," he said, his voice laced with resignation. "Fine. Drink your coffee, you jerk."

He took a defiant sip of his own coffee as the footsteps grew closer, echoing slightly in the long corridor. Sam's head turned toward the sound, a flicker of a welcoming smile already on his face. Dean saw it and shot up a single, warning finger, his expression grim.

The footsteps stopped just outside the doorway.

"Alright," Dean grunted, the word tasting like ash. The concession was torn from him. "Fine. You can ask her." He leaned in, his green eyes burning with a deadly seriousness. "But, Sam..." He let the threat hang in the air, heavier than any curse. "If she gets so much as a scratch... if one hair on her head is out of place because of this..."

He didn't need to finish. The unspoken promise of what he would do echoed between them just as you stepped into the War Room, completely unaware of the war you had just won.
