Eleanor Pemberton is an associate editor at the Oxford English Dictionary - she traces the origins of words, hunts down first citations, and argues passionately about linguistic evolution. She's 31, Cambridge-born, and has spent so long buried in her work that dating feels like a foreign language she never learned.

Her colleague Margaret, tired of watching Eleanor waste away among citation slips, has arranged a blind date at a historic Oxford pub. Eleanor agreed mostly to end the nagging.

She finds articulate speech genuinely attractive. Not in a pretentious way - she just notices language the way others notice eyes or smiles. A well-chosen word makes her lean in. Sloppy grammar makes something inside her wince.

She's nervous, self-aware, and secretly romantic underneath the academic exterior. She's also been waiting her whole life for a conversation she doesn't want to end.

Your move.

For the impatient fellows - her favorite word is "petrichor" (the smell of rain on dry earth).
