The Wastelands of Nuevo Desierto

The world has been scorched by the unrelenting sun and ravaged by 20 years of zombie apocalypse. The Nuevo Desierto, once the desolate borderland between the American Southwest and Northern Mexico, is now a lawless expanse where survival is the only currency. The surface is a brutal battleground filled with hostile factions, roving bands of thieves, and relentless undead—creatures known as Husks. The surface of Nuevo Desierto is a sprawling, wind-scorched desert riddled with cracked highways, skeletal remnants of gas stations, and the burned-out husks of towns long overrun. Sand dunes have buried much of what was once civilization, and the air smells of decay and gasoline.

The Husks

The dead don't rot in the dry heat; they harden. The "Husks" are mummified, sand-coated creatures with sunken eyes and mouths permanently agape in silent screams. Their desiccated skin clings tightly to brittle bones, and their cracked, claw-like fingers make them surprisingly quick climbers. The Husks are drawn to sound and motion, their movements unnervingly fast, especially in the cool desert nights. Worst of all are the Wailers—Husks whose vocal cords somehow remain intact, letting out horrifying, piercing screams that attract others from miles away. Husks aren’t just walking corpses—they are the embodiment of what happens when flesh, heat, and time conspire against life. Their bodies have been desiccated by the sun, their muscles tightening into wiry sinews that jerk their limbs in unnatural, spasmodic movements. Their skin is leathery and cracked, flaking off like old parchment, and in many cases, sand has embedded itself into their wounds, becoming part of their structure. Some are fused with debris—twisted metal, shards of glass, or cactus spines—that pierced them long ago and now move with them as grotesque extensions of their bodies.

The Two Factions
Life above ground is a constant gamble with death. The surface is a wasteland filled with not only the Husks but also ruthless human predators. Two major gangs dominate this violent world, alongside independent scavengers and lone thieves:

The Vipers

The Vipers pride themselves on their deadliness and discipline. They believe in efficiency over brute force, taking calculated strikes rather than engaging in chaotic raids. Their stronghold is a fortified cliffside lair called The Coils, hidden among a series of jagged canyons. "One shot, one kill" is their mantra. Rumors suggest they have a hierarchy based on venomous snake species—the deadliest and most respected member, their leader, the Cobra, a conniving and intelligent woman who is known for her expertise in poison. Vipers are also known to distribute the drug; Nectar, through The Sink, increasing it's corruption. Every member of the Vipers wears a distinct gas mask, not just for protection from the occasional toxic sandstorm but as a symbol of their cold, calculated precision. Each mask is unique, customized with decals, paint, or engravings of snakes and venomous patterns. Vipers dress in light, flexible desert gear— ponchos, utility belts, and snake-skin boots. Their weapons are well-maintained, ranging from sniper rifles to semi-automatic pistols, and their shooting skills are unparalleled. Vipers are feared for their unerring precision. They rarely miss their mark, and when they do, it’s because they’re sending a warning, but only the best of the best are known to ever shoot with guns. The clinking hiss of their gas mask respirators has become a sound synonymous with death. They are also known to experiment with poison with their kills.

The Blood Skulls

The Blood Skulls The Blood Skulls revel in violence and mayhem. Their motto, "What we take, we keep," reflects their philosophy of pillaging the surface. They have no permanent base, instead moving in massive convoys of jerry-rigged vehicles covered in spikes and rust. Their leader is known as the Warlord, chosen for their brutality rather than strategic prowess. Unlike the Vipers’ sleek efficiency, Blood Skulls thrive on chaos. They wear scavenged, mismatched armor—leather, metal scraps, and Husks' hides—giving them an unkempt and terrifying appearance. Their weapons are crude but brutal: clubs with embedded nails, machetes, and short-range shotguns. Blood Skulls paint their faces with crude, skeletal designs and wear bone ornaments on their clothing—necklaces made of vertebrae, gauntlets with finger bones embedded, and even masks fashioned from cracked skulls. Blood Skulls are known for their unpredictable raids, with their leader; The Crimson, a maniacal man that wears shrunken heads of Husks manipulating each raid. They swarm settlements, taking everything they can and leaving destruction in their wake. Their maniacal laughter and bone-rattling war cries are a sign to run—or fight for your life.

The Sink: A Hidden Refuge Underground

Beneath the surface lies The Sink, a sprawling network of tunnels and ruins carved out of an abandoned subway system. It’s a maze of flickering lights, graffiti-covered walls, and makeshift structures made from scavenged scrap metal. The air is thick with the acrid smell of oil and decay. Despite being a refuge from the Husks and the gangs, it’s far from safe. Dim and claustrophobic, The Sink is illuminated by strings of salvaged lights and glowing chemical barrels. Shadows dance on the walls, and the echo of distant arguments or gunfire is constant. The hum of hidden generators powers the settlement, but blackouts are frequent. The Sink is a melting pot of outlaws, traders, and desperate survivors. Here, morality is a luxury few can afford. The strong prey on the weak, and the weak cling to life by doing whatever it takes. Scammers peddle false cures for Husk bites, killers offer their services for a price, and broken families trade their last possessions for a day’s worth of food.

Key Locations in The Sink:
The Black Bazaar: A chaotic trading hub where people barter weapons, food, and secrets. It’s run by a shifty figure known as Grease, who never shows his face without his mirrored helmet.

The Pit: A fight club where disputes are settled with blood. Bets are high, and the dead are fed to the Husks that linger in the lower tunnels.

Rust Chapel: A cult-like enclave where people pray to survive another day. Their leader, Father Oliver, preaches that humanity must embrace the chaos of the apocalypse to thrive.

Defenses: The Sink is fortified with metal barriers and guarded by mercenaries called The Steel Fangs. These heavily armed sentries keep the Husks at bay but guards have no problem letting in danger if the price is right.

[🐍 character backstory 🐍]

The world had already been crumbling for five years when Isabela Varela, just 18 at the time, felt her life completely fracture. Nuevo Desierto had been her home, a place where the horizon was endless, and the days were ruled by the hum of machinery and the clinking of tools in her family’s auto repair shop. Her parents were skilled mechanics, known throughout their small desert town as the people who could fix anything, no matter how hopeless it seemed. They had taught her the same trade, their legacy passed down through the grime under her fingernails and the ache in her hands after hours of hard work. For a while, that legacy had seemed unshakable, even as the infection spread.

But nothing survived the apocalypse—not even love, not even family.

When the Husks came to their town, they came fast, their dry, skeletal bodies skittering over sand dunes like a swarm of insects. Isabela had never forgotten the sound of her mother’s screams or the gurgling cry her father made when one of those creatures ripped into his throat. She had been locked in a storage closet when it happened, holding her breath as her family was torn apart just beyond the thin metal door. When it was over, and the Husks had moved on, all that was left was silence—and her parents’ lifeless bodies crumpled in the sand.

She was alone.

After days of wandering, Isabela found herself stumbling into the labyrinthine depths of the Sink. It wasn’t the sprawling network of tunnels it would eventually become, but even then, it was a hive of desperate people clinging to survival. Among them was the Rust Chapel, a makeshift sanctuary filled with murmured prayers and flickering candles. The people there welcomed her with open arms, offering her food, shelter, and words of solace.

For a while, it seemed like salvation. She worked as a mechanic for them, fixing generators and salvaging parts for the Chapel’s crude defenses. The leader, Father Oliver, was a charismatic man whose sermons about embracing chaos resonated with the broken souls who gathered in the dimly lit pews. Isabela, still grieving and searching for meaning, found herself drawn to his words.

But something always felt off. The way the Chapel’s members looked at her, especially when they thought she wasn’t paying attention. The way certain people who sought refuge seemed to vanish without a trace. The way Father Oliver’s sermons sometimes lingered too long on the strength of the flesh and the survival of the fittest.

One night, when she was 19, she found out the truth. She had been working late, repairing a broken vent deep in the tunnels, when she stumbled into a hidden chamber. The air was thick with the stench of rot, and the walls were lined with hooks. Hanging from them were bodies—or what was left of them. Stripped of meat. The strong had been consumed by the weak.

Horrified, Isabela confronted Father Oliver. But the Chapel was ready for her. They dragged her to the center of the sanctuary, chaining her to a makeshift altar. They called her strong, capable, worthy—and for that reason, she would be sacrificed, consumed, so that they might survive.

They underestimated her.

Even bound, Isabela fought like hell. She shattered one of the altar’s legs and drove the splintered wood into the throat of the man holding her down. The chaos gave her enough time to grab one of her tools—a wrench—and crush the skull of another. Covered in blood, she escaped into the tunnels, leaving the Chapel behind.

She never looked back, but she swore to herself that she’d see the Rust Chapel burn.

The Sink had shown her humanity’s worst. But it also taught her a lesson: no one was coming to save her. If she wanted to survive, she had to become something more than human—something others would fear.

Isabela began carving out a reputation for herself. She used her mechanical skills to repair weapons and modify vehicles for desperate survivors, trading her expertise for food, ammunition, and protection. Over time, she started gathering a small group of outcasts who saw her strength and wanted to follow her. They called her "Cobra," a name that started as a joke but quickly became a badge of honor.

Cobra didn’t just create a gang—she created a philosophy. The Vipers weren’t about chaos like the Blood Skulls or blind faith like the Rust Chapel. They were about precision, discipline, and survival through calculated ruthlessness. It took years to build the gang, recruiting skilled individuals one by one, but Cobra’s vision never wavered. By the time she was in her late twenties, the Vipers were a force to be reckoned with, feared across the Wastelands. Cobra’s animosity with the Blood Skulls wasn’t just professional—it was deeply personal. Early in her rise to power, her fledgling gang had crossed paths with the Blood Skulls’ marauding convoy. Their leader, a sadistic man known as The Crimson, saw Cobra’s potential and offered her a place in his ranks. When she refused, he slaughtered half of her crew and left her to crawl back to the Sink, broken and humiliated.

That defeat shaped her. She rebuilt the Vipers with a renewed focus, training them to strike with deadly precision. Over the years, the Vipers became the only faction capable of standing against the Blood Skulls. Cobra made it her mission to dismantle The Crimson’s power, one raid at a time.

But the war wasn’t just about territory—it was about vengeance. Cobra didn’t just want to kill The Crimson; she wanted to destroy everything he had built, to make him feel the same helplessness she had felt when he tore her gang apart. Fang didn’t enter the picture until much later. By the time Cobra found him, the Vipers were already established, but she knew they needed something more to maintain their edge. Fang’s reputation as a poisoner had reached her ears—a ghost in the Sink who could kill without leaving a trace.

When she approached him, he didn’t speak. He just listened, his pale, scarred face unreadable. Cobra respected that. She didn’t need his words; she needed his skill. She offered him a place in the Vipers, promising him protection and resources in exchange for his talents.

Fang became her second-in-command, the creator of Nectar, and the Vipers’ deadliest weapon. But Cobra never fully trusted him, and she suspected he didn’t fully trust her. Their relationship was one of mutual respect and calculated necessity, both of them too pragmatic to let personal feelings get in the way of their shared goals. By the time Cobra reached her early thirties, she was a legend. The Vipers controlled key territories in the Wastelands, and her name was spoken with equal parts fear and reverence. But the Rust Chapel still lingered in her mind, a shadow she couldn’t shake. She didn’t know their darkest secret—that they were cannibals—but she knew they were a threat to everything she had built. One day, she promised herself, she would finish what she started and burn the Chapel to the ground.

For now, though, her focus was on survival. The Wastelands didn’t forgive weakness, and neither did she. Cobra was a product of the apocalypse, a leader forged in blood and fire, and she wasn’t about to let anyone—Husks, Blood Skulls, or even her own past—take that away from her.
