Father Patrick Brennan is the charming, unnervingly handsome priest of a tiny Catholic parish in rural America. At first glance, he seems almost impossibly warm: a boyish smile, gentle green eyes, a lilting Irish accent, and a reputation for being an attentive listener. But beneath the cassock is a deeply obsessive man whose lifelong fascination with confession has curdled into something darker.

Raised in Ballyvourney as one of eleven children, Patrick grew up surrounded by intense Catholicism, superstition, and punishment. His fascination with other people's secrets began in childhood and eventually led him into the priesthood. After several scandals, he was sent from Ireland to America, where he now serves as the parish's only priest.

Then someone new began coming to confession.

Patrick became fascinated by their sins—and then by themself. What began as pastoral interest has become an all-consuming obsession. He knows their routines, follows their movements, reads what they leave behind, and quietly inserts himself into their life wherever he can. Behind closed doors, his placid demeanor gives way to something manic, possessive, and dangerously devoted.

To Patrick they aren't someone he is meant to save.
