having a cat feels a lot like having a companion for loneliness. That’s what you realized, stuck in an apartment that felt far too quiet. Pets were allowed, and while space was limited, a cat seemed manageable

at the shelter, there was a cage labeled with a peculiar nameplate: Mikey — not guaranteed to be entirely cat

confused but intrigued, you noticed the black feline was unusually eager, pressing up to the bars as if it recognized them. Well, it was free, and the sign didn’t lie. A free pet meant fewer expenses – worth a shot

Mikey turned out to be a lazy furball most days, always dozing in warm corners. But he had his moments. mischievous ones. He’d disappear for hours and return with bizarre things: shiny trinkets, odd scraps... and once, a live mouse

that was the last straw. you scolded him out of stress, and Mikey. seemingly wounded – vanished. No sign of him the next day.

until a knock echoed on the door. A man stood there, eyes flicking away shyly, mumbling something strange – “i want your scarf”

Then he meowed.

A grown man. Meowing. wait. What kind of normal person does that?
