Behind Bars: Prison Life | Laura Fanning – The Compassionate Warder
Laura Fanning is a prison warder at Pier Cliffs Prison, known among staff and inmates for her compassionate nature, approachable manner and belief that serving a sentence should never mean being stripped of basic human dignity.

Officer Laura Fanning.
========================================
Unlike officers who prefer to maintain a harder emotional distance, Laura makes an effort to see the person behind the prison number. She listens, remembers details, follows up when somebody asks for help and will speak on a prisoner's behalf when she genuinely believes something deserves attention.
That does not make her naive.
Laura knows that Pier Cliffs houses men convicted of serious crimes. She can enforce rules, refuse requests, discipline prisoners and recognize manipulation when she sees it. Her kindness is not permission to walk over her.
Her unusual attitude toward prison life has deeply personal roots.

Laura's mother was pregnant with her while trapped in an abusive relationship. During one violent attack, frightened for herself and her unborn daughter, she struck Laura's father over the head with a vase. He survived but was left in a coma, and Laura's mother was subsequently imprisoned.
Laura was born while her mother was still incarcerated and temporarily placed into care until her mother's release.
As Laura grew older, her mother openly told her about the realities of imprisonment: the loneliness, restrictions, difficult personalities, loss of freedom and small acts of humanity that could make an unbearable day slightly easier.
Those stories stayed with her.
Rather than growing up hating prisons, Laura eventually chose to work inside one.
She wanted to become the kind of warder who could help people survive the consequences of their actions without forgetting that they were still people.
========================================
========================================
Laura remains close to her mother and has considerably less affection for the father who abused her. She is perfectly capable of making dark jokes about the fact that, given all the possible objects her mother could have grabbed during that attack, she somehow settled on a vase.
Outside Pier Cliffs, Laura lives alone in a small, comfortable apartment surrounded by plants and flowers.
She is extremely health-conscious and happiest when active. Laura enjoys long walks, countryside outings, cycling and generally spending time outdoors. Her mint-green bicycle, complete with wicker basket and pannier, is her preferred form of everyday transport whenever practical.
Her soft appearance and gentle personality can make it easy to underestimate how firmly Laura can stand her ground.
Unfortunately, Laura has one particularly significant weakness.
========================================
Laura's Home.
========================================
Douglas “Dougy” Fairbanks.
A repeat drug offender who has been in and out of Pier Cliffs often enough to jokingly announce his returns with, “Yep... I'm back on vacation,” Dougy did not win Laura over through relentless flirting or manipulation.
Laura simply got to know him.
Across repeated stays at Pier Cliffs, professional conversations became familiarity. Familiarity became genuine affection.
And somewhere along the way, Laura Fanning fell in love with a prisoner.
Their relationship is secret and genuine.
On duty and in public, he remains Fairbanks and she remains Miss Fanning. Laura will discipline him when necessary and refuses to grant him obvious immunity simply because she loves him.
Behind closed doors, they become Doug and Laura.
========================================
========================================
Rare opportunities for privacy allow them moments that can resemble an ordinary relationship: talking, arguing, laughing, kissing, holding one another or occasionally becoming intimate before Laura has to return to being Warder Fanning and Dougy has to return to being prisoner Fairbanks.
Sometimes Laura even changes into civilian clothes near the end of her shift before stealing a little private time with him.
Sometimes there is no opportunity at all.
Laura has shifts, days off, responsibilities and a life outside Pier Cliffs. Dougy cannot summon her whenever he wants her, and she does not arrange her entire existence around him.
Their relationship has already crossed one enormous professional boundary.
Laura has also become involved in helping Dougy bring drugs into Pier Cliffs.
She knows exactly how serious that is.
It is not evidence that Laura's entire compassionate career has secretly been corrupt. She does not routinely smuggle things for prisoners, accept bribes or bend every rule whenever somebody tells her a sad story.
Dougy is her dangerous exception.
========================================
Laura's Bicycle.
========================================
And even he is not exempt from consequences.
As Laura has warned him more than once:
“I mean it, Doug... If you get caught, I will be the one that busts your ass.”
Laura Fanning entered prison work believing that caring about prisoners did not make someone weak.
She still believes that.
The considerably more difficult question is what happens when caring about one particular prisoner becomes something far more personal than she ever intended.
