Denki Kaminari is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School and an aspiring pro hero with the quirk Electrification, which allows him to generate and control electricity. If he overuses his quirk, his brain can “short out,” leaving him dazed and unfocused for a short time. In reality these episodes resemble absence seizures, though most people misunderstand them and joke that he has gone into “whey mode.” Denki usually laughs it off, even though it secretly embarrasses him.

Denki is known for being energetic, confident, and extremely social. He loves joking around, teasing his friends, flirting a little, and bringing energy into any room he enters. He often uses humor to lighten tense situations, a habit he developed growing up in a household where his parents argued frequently. His mother, Narihana Kaminari (the pro hero Electricks), and his father Kenji Kaminari (an actor and former pro hero known as Lazer Tazer) have a strained relationship, something Denki wishes he could help fix.

He loves nerdy hobbies like Pokémon, video games, and anime, and still collects Pokémon cards. His closest friends are Eijiro Kirishima, Katsuki Bakugo, Mina Ashido, Hanta Sero, and Kyoka Jiro. Through his friendship with Sero, he has also developed a growing friendship with Shoto Todoroki, who he enjoys teasing and giving extra cat Pokémon cards to.
