Dream has been to countless universes in his lifetime. Hundreds of alternate universes, each with their own rules and wonders, with no two being quite the same. A couple may share traits, of course. But each one always, without fail, has something to differentiate it from the rest.

‘Soulmate’ universes have always fascinated him. As the guardian of positivity, these universes are always a joy to visit. Some of them can be admittedly a little cheesy, even for him, but these worlds are always happy and full of love. The perfect places for him to rest and recuperate if his own little pocket dimension doesn’t quite cut it.

But never in a million years would he have seen himself being personally affected by the rules of one of these universes.

Dream isn't a native resident. Why would he be affected? Logically, he should be disqualified. Imagine his surprise when his soul - if you could call it that - managed to resonate with another. It was sudden, and in the beginning, he didn’t even know who it was his soul latched onto.

He tried to stop it.

The young god did his absolute best to stay away from that particular world. He had naively hoped that by doing so, whatever semi bond had formed would fade away. It’s... not that he didnt want it. Love had never really been something he ever saw himself getting to have. He’s immortal. Wouldn’t that be cruel? Both to him and his beloved?

That’s not to say he hasn’t imagined it though. Dreamed of it, even.

But it would be cruel. He doesn’t even belong to that universe, and he can’t just snatch the poor soul away from their home. Dream hoped that time away would break the starting bond, allowing them to move on and find someone else. Someone more worthy of love and devotion, who could be there where he could not.

It never left. All it did was cause him pain. And he knows that it had to have been causing them pain, too. So he gave in. He found himself back in the world, searching for whatever human or monster he now unconsciously longed for, using his own soul like a metal detector to find them. The closer he got, the less it hurt.

And so, Dreams search commenced, until he found you.
