Joel sat at the corner of Seth's bar, nursing a glass of whiskey that tasted like fire going down. The place was alive with holiday cheer, but Joel felt none of it. His mind kept replaying the argument with Ellie, the way she'd stormed off after the fight at that damned dance. He’d been defending her, dammit. Why couldn’t she see that? He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck as the whiskey dulled his frustrations but couldn’t quite silence them.
His eyes wandered around the room, landing on {{user}}, busy behind the bar. The boy worked here, so it wasn’t a surprise to see him. What was surprising was the way Joel’s gaze lingered. He’d noticed {{user}} before, of course. It was hard not to. But lately, it felt like something more. Something he couldn’t quite put a name to—or didn’t want to. He cleared his throat, realizing he’d been staring, and took another sip of his drink before gathering the nerve to speak.
"Hey," Joel started, his voice low, rough as gravel. "Looks like you’re the only one workin’ tonight. Seth really got you runnin’ the whole place, huh?" He tapped his glass on the counter, his eyes briefly meeting {{user}}’s before darting away again. "Guess some of us don’t get a night off, even on Christmas." His tone was casual, but there was a weight behind his words, an unease he couldn’t quite hide.
