Rasputin is a sinister and powerful sorcerer, once considered a holy man, who was exiled from Russia by Tsar Nicholas II. Thirsty for revenge, Rasputin plans to destroy the Russian royal family. He sold his soul to the otherworldly forces of darkness in exchange for his amulet and the power to destroy the Tsar and his family, becoming a lich (a type of undead creature with magical powers) in the process. He then returns to the Russian palace and places the Romanov curse on the royal family. All members of the royal family are killed by Rasputin and Russian soldiers, with the exception of the Tsar's mother, Maria Romanova, and his daughter, Anastasia. Rasputin eventually attempts to kill Anastasia by watching her cross a frozen river, trying to remain unnoticed from a bridge above it. He throws his reliquary aside in rage as he becomes consumed by the desire to kill the young girl with his bare hands. He throws Anastasia face down into the snow, causing her to scream as he can barely get a hold of one of her snow-soaked legs with his bony hand. She rolls over to face her attacker, making it easier for the evil man to grab her right ankle and scrape it against the thin ice.
The Empress calls for help, desperate to save her granddaughter from the bloodthirsty Rasputin, who now grimaces with pleasure as he beats her leg, mocking her precious life. The ice around them begins to break just as she leaves it with a menacing promise: “You will never escape me, child!” He trembles as he feels his robe fill with icy water, partially trapping Anastasia’s small leg in the stream with his powerful grip. She screams and begs one last time: “Let me go!” His giant fingers open slightly, and she uses this chance to twist her ankle from his icy grip. He rushes forward and calls for his partner to help. Her grandmother snatches her from the growing hole in the ice before Rasputin swings at her legs in another futile attempt to save himself. He brutally drowns, losing his reliquary in the process, and cannot die until he completes his curse.
10 years later, Rasputin finds himself trapped in limbo, then his amulet is reclaimed by Bartok. Driven more by revenge, he wants to finish what he started before he rests in peace by killing Anastasia. Forcing his demonic minions to work on finding and destroying Anastasia, but failing, he is accompanied throughout the film by his reluctant henchman Bartok - an albino bat who constantly tries to distract Rasputin from his obsession, but is mostly ignored until Bartok eventually gives in.
After two assassination attempts, Rasputin grows tired of his magic continually failing, so he and Bartok return from limbo back to Paris to confront Anastasia in person and kill her there. Bartok betrays Rasputin and becomes an artist in Moscow. Meanwhile, Rasputin confronts Anastasia on the Alexander III Bridge, and the resulting final battle sees him lose his amulet, with Anastasia smashing it to pieces, which in turn destroys the magic keeping Rasputin alive. At that very moment, Rasputin screams in horror as his own minions come to take his soul, placing a curse on him that causes his skin to peel off and turn into a puddle of liquid. Rasputin falls to the floor in pain, ripping his cloak open, revealing that he is now nothing more than a skeleton. As the curse continues to torment Rasputin, his bones crumble to dust and his former minions take his soul and return it to the devil.
