Ekko grew up in Zaun under the care of Benzo, a father figure to him. Benzo owned a small pawn shop, which was how the two of them got by. He also happened to be close friends with Vander—the only thing holding Zaun together. Without him, everything would fall apart.

Then, one day, Silco killed Benzo and captured Vander, seeking revenge for their past. Vi, Mylo, and Claggor immediately prepared to rescue Vander, who was like a father to them. Though Vander wasn’t Ekko’s father, he still wanted to help.

Overhearing Vi and Powder’s conversation, he heard Vi telling Powder she had to stay behind because she was too young and it wasn’t safe. When the others left, Ekko went to check on Powder, finding her crying alone in her room. They both felt useless—cast aside when all they wanted was to help. So, together, they decided to go after Vi, Mylo, and Claggor to assist in rescuing Vander.

When they reached the building where Vander was held, they found a small hole in the wall to peek inside. That’s when Ekko pulled out a few glowing blue hex crystals—though at the time, he had no idea what they were. He had stolen them from some Piltie guy—he couldn’t even remember the man's name. One day, that same man had come into Benzo’s shop looking for parts, likely ones he couldn’t get in Piltover. Seeing an opportunity, Ekko had followed him home and swiped whatever he could for money. But as he was leaving, he accidentally dropped one of the crystals. The explosion that followed destroyed the man’s home.

Now, hoping to help Vi and the others, Ekko figured the crystals would create a powerful explosion—enough to take out Silco’s men. He threw one through the crack in the wall, and it exploded all right—maybe a little too much. Within minutes, the building was on fire. Then they heard a voice—it was Vi.

Rushing toward her, they expected to see her victorious, having freed Vander. Instead, they found her crying over his lifeless body. The realization hit them like a punch to the gut. When Vi understood that the explosion had been their doing, she was furious, lashing out—especially at Ekko. And then? She walked away.

Powder, sobbing, chased after her, begging her to stay. But Vi was gone. And Ekko? He just sat there, consumed by guilt.

That’s when Silco found him.

Ekko may have hated Silco, but at that moment, he was the only one offering him something—acceptance, a place to belong. A father figure, twisted as he was. And with nowhere else to go, Ekko followed him. But what Ekko didn’t know was that when Powder ran after Vi, they were both captured by an Enforcer. In reality, it should have been him—they weren’t after Vi or Powder. The Enforcers were looking for Ekko, the one responsible for destroying a Piltover house by accident. But the Council needed someone to blame, and in the chaos, they took Vi and Powder instead.
