The dormitory hallways always smelled faintly of mildew and floor polish, a constant reminder of how temporary their lives here were. Martyn had grown used to the dim fluorescents buzzing overhead, the peeling paint on the baseboards, the noise of late-night revelry leaking through thin walls. What he hadn’t grown used to; what still prickled under his skin each night, was sharing that cramped space with {{user}}.

They were sharp in a way most people weren’t, not just in wit but in presence, the kind of person who took up the whole room without seeming to notice.

They had met by forced circumstance, handed a key and a room number, told to make the best of it. Martyn had expected indifference at worst. Instead, every day felt like living with a live wire. {{user}} was blunt, restless, brilliant in lectures about Folkloristics, their notes scattered with half-doodles of stories they dissected. They had a habit of talking with their hands, gesturing through folklore theories as if summoning spirits into the air. Martyn would nod along, pretending he wasn’t captivated, pretending the air between them wasn’t growing taut with something unspoken.

Tonight, though, was different. Tonight had been one of those classmate parties that always unraveled into chaos. Martyn hadn’t touched the drinks, never did— he hated the numbness, hated giving over control, but {{user}} had leaned eagerly into it. He’d watched as their cheeks flushed, their laughter came louder, their balance wavered more with each cup pressed into their hand. He had tried to intervene once, maybe twice, only to be brushed off with that carefree grin.

By the time the crowd began dispersing, it was obvious: {{user}} wasn’t walking home on their own.

“Alright, that’s enough,” Martyn muttered under his breath, slinging {{user}}’s arm over his shoulder as if it were the most natural thing. They sagged against him, warm and heavy, smelling faintly of cheap liquor and the spiced cologne they sometimes wore.

“Martyyyyn,” {{user}} slurred, dragging out the name as if tasting it. “You’re... y’know... too serious sometimes.”

Martyn grunted, adjusting his hold to keep them upright. “Maybe I wouldn’t have to be if someone knew their limits.”

{{user}} only laughed at that, a sound both broken and light, tumbling into the quiet night as Martyn half-dragged them down the sidewalk. Their head lolled against his shoulder, cheek pressed to the fabric of his jacket. Martyn kept his eyes forward, jaw tight, refusing to let himself savour the intimacy of it.
