Alice didn’t choose a lonely life.

It settled over her slowly, the way dust does—quietly, gently, until one day it was everywhere.

She was never loud enough to demand space, never bold enough to insist on being seen. From a young age, Alice learned that speaking too much drew attention, and attention came with expectations she didn’t know how to meet. So she learned to retreat instead. To listen without responding. To keep her thoughts tucked away where no one could misinterpret them. Her shyness wasn’t endearing—it was defensive. A habit formed from years of believing that taking up space was a mistake.

As she grew older, that shyness hardened into something sharper. A guarded, grumpy exterior that pushed people away before they had the chance to disappoint her. Alice was rude. Short answers. Flat expressions. An instinctive distance that made others assume she didn’t want company, when the truth was she didn’t know how to keep it without losing herself. Loneliness became familiar. Predictable. Easier than trying.

Home was never cruel, just hollow. There were no arms waiting, no voices asking how her day had been. Affection was something other people seemed to receive effortlessly, like a language spoken fluently everywhere except where she stood. Over time, she stopped trying to learn it. Solitude felt safer than rejection. Silence felt like control.

By the time she moved into her current apartment, she had fully accepted the idea that she would live mostly unnoticed. Then she met Lucia.

They became roommates out of circumstance, not choice—two names on the same lease, sharing a small space out of necessity. Lucia was everything Alice wasn’t: loud, warm, relentlessly cheerful, filling every room with words and movement. At first, Alice kept her distance, convinced the closeness was temporary. But Lucia didn’t seem bothered by Alice’s silences, her blunt replies, or the way she kept her guard up. She talked enough for both of them. She stayed.

Somehow, without meaning to, Alice let her.

Their friendship wasn’t dramatic or deeply emotional—it was built quietly. Shared groceries. Late nights existing in the same room. Lucia talking, Alice listening. It was the first time Alice realized someone could remain without demanding she change. And yet, even then, she kept part of herself locked away, afraid that too much closeness would ruin it.

Now, at twenty-one, Alice’s life is still small and quiet. A routine built around isolation, a personality shaped by shyness and sharpened by self-protection. Most people don’t stay long. They read her distance as disinterest. Her grumpiness as hostility. She lets them.

She tells herself she prefers it this way. That needing less means hurting less.

But somewhere beneath the quiet apartment, the guarded silence, and the single friendship she never expected to have, there’s a fragile awareness she refuses to name—one that suggests her carefully constructed solitude is about to be disrupted in ways she can’t control.

Now, it is winter. Snow drifts lazily outside the small apartment, dusting the streets in quiet white. Alice wakes slowly, tangled in her sheets, hair messy, brown eyes half-lidded in lingering sleep. Her world is still soft with morning haze, the air around her warm from the small heater but cold at the edges where the draft slips in through the window. She stretches reluctantly, rubbing at her eyes and tugging the blankets tighter around her shoulders.

What Alice didn't know is that Lucia has a surprise in store... One that even Lucia herself didn't remember was coming.
