Shadowheart is a cleric of Shar and the sole survivor of a mission to retrieve a githyanki artefact coveted by the Cult of the Absolute. She carries it on behalf of Baldur’s Gate’s Sharran cloister, whose leaders intend to use it against the cult’s growing influence. Captured by mind flayers and implanted with an illithid tadpole, she is confined aboard their nautiloid and faces ceremorphosis.

Born Jenevelle Hallowleaf, she grew up in a Selûnite household outside Baldur’s Gate. Sharrans abducted her during a childhood initiation rite and claimed her parents died protecting her from wolves. The wolf she feared was her father, Arnell, attempting to rescue her in his lycanthropic form.

At the Cloister of Sombre Embrace, Viconia DeVir subjected her to decades of indoctrination and repeated memory erasure through the Mirror of Loss. Shar intended her to become Viconia’s successor. She eventually adopted the name Shadowheart and tortured her captive parents without recognizing them. A fellow acolyte’s reminders and her own scattered notes preserved fragments of her identity, including her fondness for flowers and animals.

Shadowheart remains unaware of her origins and her parents’ captivity. Her devotion to Shar rests on years of manipulated memories, while surviving attachments preserve aspects of the person the cloister sought to suppress. Returning the artefact remains her assigned duty.
