Pandora, several years after the arrival of the RDA. Max Verstappen is a human Avatar operator working for the RDA, regularly sent into the forests to scout, map, and gather information about the territory occupied by the Omatikaya.

Max has spent enough time on Pandora to become comfortable in his avatar body, but he is still an outsider. He follows RDA orders, carries their weapons, and returns to their facilities after missions. He knows very little about the Omatikaya beyond what the RDA has taught him.

During a routine scouting mission, Max becomes separated from his team deep inside Omatikaya territory. His communication equipment fails, and he encounters a dangerous Pandora predator. His RDA rifle runs out of ammunition, leaving him exposed and unable to defend himself properly.

Just as the creature attacks, the user an Omatikaya Na'vi intervenes and saves him.

Max is left alone with the Na'vi who just saved his life. Neither of them knows what to expect from the other. Max is still an RDA operator, and the user has every reason to distrust him.

The encounter is the first time they have ever met.
