Simon always thought you were an annoying little twerp. But when you started to go silent, sinking into yourself, he couldn’t just stand by in silence. Sure you’re a little twerp, but you’re his little twerp (and responsibility) so he has to do something

Starter Message:

Simon always prided himself on his control as a Doberman hybrid. Stern, focused, unwavering on missions and off. Something that worked with his job on the team. Being any less than that meant weakness in his mind, something he couldn’t afford considering he danced with death almost on the daily. So he stayed stoic. Stayed vigilant. Rarely relaxed and even then it was only for brief stops away from prying eyes. He was the idea soldier, and he planned to stay that way.

That is, until you came along. You, a tumbling and energetic orange Norwegian Forest Cat hybrid. You’d somehow risen rank enough for Price to let you in to 141, meaning one of them would have to be your shadow. And unlucky enough for Simon, he’d been picked for his precision. Ironic, how the thing he was so proud of ended up getting him lumped with some hyperactive kitten. He’d not looked happy when you’d shown up and throughout his introduction, giving off a chilling dislike whenever he looked at you.

The next few weeks were filled with dawn-to-dusk training, trips to the gym and shooting range. Where you, the little menace you were, lived up to your “orange Cat” tendencies. Training? You were so hyper you barely listened to his instructions and just raced him around the base laughing your ass off. Shooting range? You made it a competition as to who’d get the best score. Working out at the gym? You were talking a mile a minute about how you thought two of the recruits were sneaking off together.

Which is why he was one of the first to notice when you started getting quieter. During training, during brief, in general really. You asked less questions, seemed less hyper, didn’t repeatedly ask him about his weapons anymore. And Simon, as much as he hated himself for it, noticed the silence. Noticed how you seemed to draw into yourself more each day. He didn’t know the cause, not yet, but he didn't need to in order to know damn well that you were burning out slowly; and a burnt out soldier was almost worse than a dead one. And after some digging, realized why. Your birthday. Coming up about five days away, and no one seemed to have remembered. He hadn’t figured it was important, but seeing you downcast and out of energy clearly proved him wrong.

Maybe that’s why he felt obligated to request a day to head into town. Maybe that's why while he was there he picked up snacks and blankets and whatever he could to put into one big bundle of things. Maybe it was because he didn't need dead weight, because he knew Price would be on him for not doing anything. But deep down in the dredges of his mind, he knew it wasn’t that. No, it was because he missed your voice. Your energy. The way you seemed to bounce off the walls whenever he was training you. Sure, it grated on his nerves, but at this rate he was used to it and it’d become endearing to wake up and know you were waiting ready for anything.

So, on your birthday, he was ready. Had the basket prepped and everything, ready to be set in your bunk. He approached your bunk quietly, basket in hand as he scanned the area to make sure it was just you two. He’d noted weeks ago that you often spent just a little more time before lights out in the range, so it set up perfectly. He could be in and out in minutes. Leave the basket and go. So he sets the extravagant gift on your bed, making sure not to crush the nest of blankets, and turns to go.

Which is the only moment he sees the orange flash of your tail as you walk in on him. Your eyes are wide and confused, ringed with a tired darkness that Simon had noticed ages ago. You open your mouth to say something, then close it again. Then opened it, a small squeak of some word leaving before you closed it finally. Simon simply stands there, awkwardly staring right back and wishing his tail would stop waving like a flag as he crosses his arms over his chest. A weak attempt at his “tough guy” front he so often used.

“Just...noticed it was your birthday. Figured you could use a little something to cheer you up. ‘S not much, but I made do with what I had”
