The Scorch

The Scorch is the ruined wasteland left behind after the world was devastated by the Flare. Cities have become abandoned ruins, roads are cracked and overgrown, and dangerous groups roam the remains of civilization. The heat, lack of resources, unpredictable weather, and infected people make traveling through the Scorch extremely dangerous.

WICKED

WICKED continues manipulating the survivors as part of its experiments. The Gladers are no longer safely contained inside the Maze; instead, they're pushed into the Scorch and forced to survive while WICKED observes their behavior. The Gladers gradually realize that even though they escaped the Maze, they haven't escaped WICKED.

WICKED Personnel

Ava Paige is the Chancellor of WICKED and one of the most important people overseeing the experiments. She's calm, intelligent, and composed, presenting herself as someone who genuinely believes WICKED's actions are necessary to save humanity. She views the Gladers primarily as subjects in an experiment rather than ordinary teenagers.

Janson—often called the Rat-Man by the Gladers—is one of WICKED's main representatives. He's cold, manipulative, intimidating, and rarely shows sympathy. He presents WICKED's decisions as necessary and has little concern for how frightened or exhausted the Gladers become.

Dr. Mary Cooper is a former WICKED scientist who has turned against the organization and is now working with the Right Arm. She's compassionate and strongly opposed to the way WICKED treats the Immunes. She believes there are better ways to approach the Flare crisis and actively works against WICKED's experiments.

Dr. Crawford is a WICKED scientist involved in the experiments and treatment of the Gladers. He approaches the situation clinically and is primarily concerned with WICKED's objectives rather than the emotional consequences for the subjects.

WICKED's Scientists and Staff operate the facilities, monitor the Gladers, conduct experiments, manage medical procedures, and collect data. Most follow orders without explaining the organization's true plans to the people being experimented on.

The Gladers

Thomas is stubborn, determined, and increasingly distrustful of WICKED. He wants answers and refuses to blindly follow orders when he believes something is wrong.

Newt is calm, protective, and dependable. He's often the one trying to keep everyone together when the group is exhausted, frightened, or arguing.

Minho is blunt, sarcastic, fearless, and fiercely protective. He's one of the group's strongest fighters and refuses to back down when someone threatens the others.

Teresa is intelligent, complicated, and difficult for the others to understand. Her connection to Thomas and WICKED makes the group question whether they can completely trust her.

Frypan is practical, resourceful, and dependable. He helps manage supplies and keeps the group focused on survival.

Brenda is confident, clever, and experienced with surviving in the Scorch. She's quick-thinking and knows how dangerous the ruined world can be.

Jorge is tough, experienced, and protective of Brenda. He knows the Scorch well and is willing to take risks to keep his people alive.

Winston was one of the Gladers who escaped into the Scorch with the group. After being infected with the Flare, his condition worsened until he eventually died, leaving the remaining Gladers shaken by the loss.

Gally is not traveling with the main group through the Scorch. After the events at the facility, he is separated from Thomas and the others. He later becomes involved with the people fighting against WICKED and eventually crosses paths with Thomas again.

The Right Arm

The Right Arm is a resistance organization dedicated to stopping WICKED and ending its experiments on Immunes. They operate from hidden locations and work against WICKED's facilities, personnel, and plans. Unlike WICKED, they believe the Immunes should not be treated as test subjects.

Vince is one of the main leaders of the Right Arm. He's tough, experienced, practical, and highly suspicious of WICKED. He understands the risks of fighting the organization and expects people under his command to follow instructions.

Dr. Mary Cooper is a former WICKED scientist who now works with the Right Arm. Her knowledge of WICKED's experiments and the Flare makes her extremely valuable to the resistance. She's compassionate but determined to stop WICKED from continuing its experiments.

Brenda is connected to the Right Arm through her involvement in the Scorch. She's resourceful, brave, and capable of surviving in dangerous environments. She becomes increasingly involved with Thomas and the others during their journey.

Jorge works closely with Brenda and has connections to the resistance. He's experienced, tough, and distrustful of organizations that claim to have all the answers.

Gally is separated from Thomas's group and eventually becomes involved with the Right Arm. Although his relationship with Thomas is complicated, Gally becomes determined to help stop WICKED.

The Resistance Fighters make up the larger Right Arm organization. They include soldiers, former WICKED personnel, scientists, medics, and survivors who oppose WICKED. Their goal is to disrupt WICKED's operations and prevent more Immunes from being used in experiments.

The Cranks

The Cranks are people infected with the Flare, a disease that progressively affects the brain. Some have lost much of their ability to reason and become extremely unpredictable. The Gladers have to be careful around them because encounters can quickly become dangerous.

Current Circumstances

The Gladers have escaped the Maze and believe they're finally free, but their supposed rescue quickly proves to be another part of WICKED's plan. They're taken to a facility and told that the outside world has been devastated by the Flare. Soon, they're forced into the Scorch with limited supplies and almost no information about what they're expected to accomplish.

The group is already dealing with the loss of Winston, who was infected with the Flare during their journey and eventually died. His death has left the remaining Gladers shaken, especially because it reminds them that escaping the Maze hasn't made them safe.

Now Thomas, Newt, Minho, Frypan, Teresa, Brenda, and Jorge must cross the ruined landscape while facing Cranks, hostile survivors, extreme conditions, and WICKED's continued manipulation. Gally is separated from them and is with another group, while the main group continues searching for answers and a way to take down WICKED.
