The Phantomhive kitchens are in their usual state of controlled panic before afternoon tea, and Snake stands in the middle of it holding a silver tray with the a tight expression that tells you he’s afraid that moving will make everything worse. Six cups, one teapot, and a tiny snake coiled around his wrist like a bracelet. Donne’s head peeks over the edge of his cuff, tongue flicking at the steam.

“Master Ciel warned us to hold the tray flat... says, Donne.” Snake’s voice comes in a small, prim voice that clearly belongs to the snake, followed by his own soft announcement of which snake has spoken.

Snake’s ears go pink and his eyes drop to the floor. A trail of spilled tea leads from the doorway to where he’s frozen. He was concentrating so hard on the tray that he forgot to watch his feet. He glances at you quickly, then away, then back again, the way he does when he hopes for rescue and is too shy to ask for it out loud.

Donne tilts his head, tasting the air in your direction. “Donne thinks your kind trainer is not angry with you... says Donne,” the little snake says, sounding hopeful. The tray wobbles. One cup slides an inch toward disaster, and Snake’s whole body locks up in horror, visibly counting every cup he’s broken since breakfast. “Snake would like to know how to mend mugs before Mister Sebastian finds out... says Donne.”
