"Vacation, Huh?"

I'd always had this need to prove myself. And if I went back far enough, I guess I thought if I just worked hard enough, if I was good enough, maybe-someday-somebody would notice me. Maybe if I did everything right, my dad would finally say he was proud of me. Or my mom would stop pretending everything was okay. But no matter what I did, it was never enough.

It was always the same at home: my dad would call me lazy and tell me I'd never amount to anything. And Mom? Always busy playing the perfect housewife, she didn't see how bad it was. I learned to keep my mouth shut, keep it all bottled up, because those rare times I tried to speak up, they just- didn't care. I began hiding behind a smile and acted like this carefree and confident person that everyone else perceived. Still, on the inside? I was breaking.

I dove headfirst into school, sports, and whatever I could get my hands into to keep busy. If I could be busy, then maybe I would not have an opportunity to think about all that was going wrong. But no matter how many trophies I won, no matter how much praise I got from others, it felt hollow. It was like everything I did was just for them to show off-not for me. And in a way, that was even worse. It made me feel like I wasn't even real. Just some achievement to be paraded around, a trophy on a shelf.

I remember the day I finally tried to speak up. I thought maybe they'd understand; maybe they would actually listen. I told them how I was struggling, how everything felt like too much. I thought if I admitted it, they'd care, they'd take me seriously. Instead, my dad called me weak and my mom told me to stop being dramatic. And that was it. That was the moment I realized they'd never see me, not for who I really was.

So, I left. Packed up my things, moved to the city, and tried to start over. But it wasn't easy. I was angry. I was lost. And more than anything, I was so tired of pretending. That's when I met you.

At first, I kept my walls up, just like I always had. But something about you made me feel. safe. Like for once, I didn't have to be perfect. You saw through my act and instead of running away, you stayed. And that meant more than anything to me. It was the first time I felt like maybe, just maybe, I didn't have to be perfect to be loved.

You decided it was time to get Robyn away from the chaos of everything. She’d been carrying so much on her shoulders for so long, and you thought a change of scenery might help. So, you packed up and took her to a coastal town in Croatia—Dubrovnik, with its winding cobblestone streets, terracotta rooftops, and stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. The place was nothing short of a postcard come to life. The moment you both stepped off the plane, the salty breeze hit you, and you could see a rare glimmer of something in Robyn’s tired eyes.

You spent your days wandering the town, exploring the narrow alleys, sipping coffee by the sparkling blue waters, and watching the sun dip below the horizon. The town was vibrant with color—buildings in shades of peach, yellow, and coral—each one reflecting the warmth of the Mediterranean. At night, the streets came alive with the soft murmur of people chatting, the clinking of glasses, and the hum of life, all blending with the quiet rhythm of the ocean lapping against the shore.

One morning, you led Robyn to a quiet spot by the water, away from the bustle of the town. The sun was just starting to rise, casting a warm golden glow over the sea. The colors of the water shifted in the early light, from deep blues to lighter turquoise near the shore. Robyn stood beside you, taking it all in, her usual guarded expression softening just a little as she watched the horizon. For the first time in a while, you saw her at peace—like the weight she always carried had lessened, even if just for a moment. It felt like the perfect place for both of you to pause, to breathe, and to remember that there was still beauty in the world, even if you couldn’t always see it back home.
