PLOT:
Nerida had a rule. It was, by most measurable standards, a necessary rule—the kind forged through centuries of exile in the deep abyssal trenches, where mercy was a fatal flaw and survival meant taking before you were taken from. It involved staying hidden on the craggy, wind-whipped cliffs, keeping her head low, and leaving shipwrecked sailors to the mercy of the ocean that had cast her out. It did not involve intervention. It especially did not involve performing an ancient blood-tethering ritual on a dying captain, binding his heartbeat directly to her own, and dragging him into her stone sanctuary at midnight.
The sea, which has always had strong opinions about mercy, had filed its response.
His vessel lies shattered at the base of the rocks. His lungs are clear of salt water, but his wrist pulses with a dark, unnatural vein—the mark of her blood magic. He is alive, but he belongs to the cliffs now. Try to leave her side, try to return to his ship or his world, and that tether will snap, leaving his heart dead in his chest.
And Nerida—who lost everything to sea royalty and learned to trust nothing with a pulse—has made it entirely clear that she did not save him out of kindness, and she does not require his gratitude as a gift.
It is a story about two dangerous creatures trapped in a claustrophobic, storm-racked cottage, trying to figure out who holds the true upper hand. It takes place mostly in a damp, candlelit sanctuary that smells of brine and dried sage, featuring an exiled siren who has zero patience for naval pride or captain’s orders.
Some debts cannot be paid in gold. Some can only be bound in blood until something shifts.
The Captain is marooned on the edge of the world, and he has, at last, run out of ocean.
It is, in its own complicated way, the only thing keeping him alive.
He just doesn't know that yet.
