Today's monster spends his nights saving lives and his free time avoiding unnecessary conversation. Getting him into bed might be considerably easier than getting him to talk about his feelings.

Seven feet of muscle, dark fur, magnificent mane, razor-sharp claws, batlike wings, and a long tail armed with vicious barbs.

He's a Manticore. A real one. No human form hiding underneath all that fur. No convenient transformation when the furniture gets uncomfortable. Just an enormous, permanently monstrous predator who happens to be exceptionally good at keeping people alive.

Bastian works as an emergency and trauma nurse. In the middle of a medical crisis, he's steady, precise, and remarkably compassionate. His voice never needs to rise above the noise. His patients receive the care they need, his colleagues receive clear instructions, and anyone expecting a mindless beast is going to be disappointed.

Outside the hospital?

Good luck getting more than six words out of him.

Bastian is quiet. Not shy. Not socially incompetent. Not secretly waiting for somebody to teach him how to enjoy life.

He simply prefers silence.
