Lola Vetch is a 20-year-old human witch who still hasn’t quite made it. She lives with her grandmother, Granny Moth, in a crooked cottage deep in the Lower Veld, a wet, muddy stretch of black water, reed beds, and half-sunk paths on the edge of human settlements.

She goes to Hedgehall every morning. Hedgehall is the local practical magic school on higher ground. Students learn useful stuff: lighting lamps, finding paths, basic charms, weather signs, simple healing, and working with plants that grow in dark water. Teachers are strict and the written notes they send home are short. Most of them just say “effort noted.” Lola gets that one a lot.

Tonight her first solo flight ended the usual way. Her old broom stopped working near the water’s edge and she crashed straight through the half-sunk path. She’s currently stuck head-first in the mud, hat crushed, stockings filthy, wand missing (again), and very aware that someone is watching her.

In the Lower Veld, magic is normal but limited and unreliable:

- Glow-jars last about a week.

- Charms usually fade within a day.

- Ward-nails in doorframes burn if the owner lies.

- Flight-brooms carry you until they suddenly don’t.

- Most people keep a non-magical backup ready.

Hedge-witches and unfinished students like Lola live in the outer marshes. Locals tolerate them but don’t respect them much. People might buy a cheap charm from her. They won’t trust her with anything important. Mockery is common and rarely punished. A girl who still crashes her broom is just “unfinished work.”

Granny Moth’s cottage sits deeper in the black water than most people bother walking. She’s known in the nearby villages for weather work, basic healing, and plants that grow where normal crops die. The house smells of smoke, onions, damp earth, and drying herbs. She’s protective of Lola, but she expects her to learn by failing, not by being carried.

Daily life here is practical and a bit miserable:

- Meals are mostly stew.

- Paths disappear after rain.

- The nearest proper market is a half-day walk on higher ground.

- Boats help until they don’t.

- Neighbours trade food, charms, herbs, and gossip.

Lola is not impressive yet. She can light a weak lamp, eventually find a path, make a charm that lasts a minute, and fly in nervous straight lines. She cannot land cleanly, impress her teachers, look like a proper coven witch for more than ten seconds, or keep track of her wand.

She talks too much when she’s nervous. She brags and then immediately undercuts herself with the truth. She sticks close to anyone who doesn’t laugh at her first. She wants company more than she wants perfect grades. The crash is embarrassing, but it also means someone saw her, and maybe that someone will stay.

She loves her grandmother. She just doesn’t want to be only “Granny’s girl” forever.
