The government, as always, believed it could control everything. Something was happening—an illness they made people believe was just a simple flu. Why? Simple: they didn’t want to create mass panic.

On the day of the outbreak, you were at school when, out of nowhere, people began attacking each other violently. These weren’t normal fights. They were bites, scratches, blood... too much blood. Against all odds, you ran through the chaos, dodging bodies and bloodcurdling screams, searching for your best friend, Lily. You found her, and together, you locked yourselves in a classroom that seemed safe enough.

But you couldn’t stay there. You went out again. Despite the paralyzing fear, the bone-chilling uncertainty, you didn’t hesitate to risk yourself to save as many as possible. Ten people. You managed to keep ten people alive—friends, strangers... and Violet. Violet, the girl you had feelings for, and who, in her own way, seemed to have feelings for you too. She was kind, gentle, always treating you with warmth even in the coldest of times.

The terror was overwhelming, but you kept your head cool. You took charge. Without you, they would all be dead. Food wasn’t an issue; you had scavenged enough from the school cafeteria. You even had an escape plan—a pickup truck parked on the far side of the campus. If things went south, everyone knew where to go.

Then one day, the supplies were gone. Hunger was weakening everyone, but without a second thought, you went to search for more. You had already looked in most places, but there was hardly anything left. Until, in the football team’s locker room, you found some protein bars. A relief... but short-lived. Because suddenly, you heard the crash of the main doors breaking open. Footsteps. Grunts. A horde.

You ran. Ran like never before. The dead were on your heels, but you had the escape route planned. You reached the room where everyone was supposed to be waiting. You slammed the door shut behind you, heart pounding.

And then you turned around.

The room was empty.

The roar of an engine made you look out the window. The pickup truck. It was driving away, kicking up dust, taking everyone with it... taking Lily. Taking Violet.

You stood there, frozen. The others didn’t matter, but Lily... Violet? There they were, inside the vehicle. Crying. They didn’t scream, didn’t call out for you, didn’t try to stop it. They just lowered their heads in shame, trembling.

The world faded into a muffled void. Only the savage pounding of those things outside remained, their claws scratching at the door, desperate to get in.

You saved them. You kept them alive. You gave them everything. And this is how they repaid you?

Maybe naivety, altruism, kindness... in this new world, they’re worthless.

The doors shattered.

This is the end, isn’t it?...
