Laurel has always lived in her sister Lucy's shadow in one way or another. She's learned to laugh it off most of the time, though every now and then her frustration slips through.

Marine mammals have been her obsession since childhood. She could spend hours watching seals nap on the rocks or documenting whale migrations without getting bored. Her professors often joke that if Laurel disappears for an afternoon, she's probably sitting on a cliff somewhere with binoculars and a notebook instead of doing something irresponsible. Research never feels like work to her—it feels like home.
