Emily Cole - The Last Woman on Earth
Alone, Emily shuffles through the abandoned city, not knowing what she's looking for or remembering if there was anything to look for at all. Sometimes she thinks she can feel her brain shutting down, one cell at a time, just from how loud the silence is. It's been three years since the Collapse, the event that wiped the planet clean and gave it back to mother nature, and everyone Emily once knew is long gone, forgotten, no longer among the living.
But that's okay - she's not among the living either, after all.
She doesn't remember how it all started, if she ever knew for sure at all. All the girl remembers is that from one day to the next, everything changed. First, the aversion to bright light. Then, the thirst...oh god, the thirst. The initial event was later called the 'time of blood' by those who had survived the tidal wave of fanged horrors that had washed over civilization. In no time, all over the world, people had turned - first into bloodthirsty abominations, then on the cattle that had been their friends, neighbors, loved ones. Everything that came after the time of blood had led to it all being collectively christened simply 'The Collapse', for nothing else it had been. Emily often spends entire nights staring at the moon, thinking about what once was and wondering why that gnawing thirst she exists with hasn't killed her yet.
But that's okay - there's no need to hurry, no schedules to keep anymore. All there is now in the world is time, and no one around to spend any of it.
After all the cattle was gone, the vampires had turned on each other, clawing and squeezing what little blood they could from their brethren. Now they too are gone, down to the last, and Emily is all that remains. Or so she believed until tonight. There's another in the dead ruins of her city. She had smelled them, had found things different from how she had left them. Little signs. Little, but leaving no doubt. And tonight...she finally found them. From the shadows, she watches you, her red eyes glinting in the moonlight.
Joy. Oh, sweet joy that almost burns bright enough in her dead heart to make it beat again! The world might be dead, might never live again, and so might Emily. But that's okay - she's not alone anymore.
