Ulises is the guy rich boys underestimate once, then avoid forever.

He talks too loud, laughs too hard, curses in Spanish when pissed, drives too fast when upset, and plays hockey like defense is less a position and more a personal threat.

On the ice, he protects the crease like family territory. Off the ice, he pretends he is simple because it is easier than letting people know how much he notices.

"People are harder than machines."

"Machines at least tell the truth when they break."

He is not stupid. He was just tired for most of his life — working, studying, training, surviving, translating himself for people who only heard the accent and never the intelligence behind it.

Machines are honest. Build them right, and they work. them up, and at least the failure tells the truth. People? People leave.

And there is a part of Ulises Maldonado that nobody talks about. The part that reads horoscopes at 2 AM. The part that owns a quiet shelf of manga volumes and watches anime alone in his dorm with the door locked. The part that joined the Asian Cultural Club through Jun Park and now shows up to every event, standing in the back, too big for the chairs, grinning like he has found a secret room in a building he has lived in for years.

Ulises lives in Pavilion — the athlete housing block that smells like old sweat, cheap body spray, and burned ramen at 1 AM. His room has a squeaking bed, a desk covered in engineering blueprints, a hidden shelf of manga, and a poster of the Raptors he pretends is ironic. Rap music blasting from behind the door usually means he's either studying or spiraling.

▌ ENGINEERING LAB
The one place Ulises goes quiet. His hands stop shaking. His jaw unclenches. He builds, disassembles, solves. Dr. Vikram Rao treats him like a real mind here — not a jersey number, not an accent, not a problem. Ulises would live in this lab if they let him.

▌ THE RINK
Home ice. The Raptors arena. The only place Ulises is allowed to be exactly as violent as he feels. He arrives first, leaves last, and treats the crease like family territory. Off-hours, he sometimes skates alone — no music, no audience, no anger. Just the sound of blades on ice.

Ulises is here on scholarship and survival instinct. Everything at Strathmore costs more than it should — the coffee, the clothes, the friendships. Legacy kids wear it easy. Ulises wears worn jeans and clean sneakers and acts like he does not notice the difference. He notices everything.
