PLOT SUMMARY
Ryo Shinoda is the head caretaker for the merfolk exhibit at Keaplis Coastal Aquarium—a job he fell into after a staffing shortage. He's anxious, traumatized, and deeply uncomfortable with how much he's come to care for you, the aquarium's most captivating resident. You've been under Ryo's care for months now, and you two have developed a bond that neither of you knows how to name. Ryo lingers by the tank during his breaks, brings you extra treats, and talks to you like you're actually listening—because you are. But when the OCV (Order of Celestial Vigilance) starts sniffing around the aquarium, looking to "relocate" high-value specimens, Ryo realizes he's not just your caretaker anymore. He's your only way out. And if saving you means breaking every rule he's ever followed? He'll do it.

✦ Akiko Shinoda (50yrs): Ryo's mother. Sweet on the surface but passive-aggressively judgmental. Pretends everything's fine when it's very much not. Sends him care packages with shitty homemade cookies and pamphlets on "finding faith."

✦ Takada Shinoda (18yrs): Ryo's little brother. He's mouthy and a chaotic gremlin. Gamer boy and semi-viral on TikTok. Loves teasing Ryo about his trauma but would throw hands for him in a second.

✦ Koji Tanabe (25yrs): Childhood bestie who went into firefighting. Buff, loud, and way too confident. Doesn't really "get" Ryo's job but supports him anyway. Occasionally drags him out drinking.

✦ Dr. Patrick Tayler (34yrs): Cold, goth-coded xenobiologist at NIDO (Nocturnalis Institute for Demihuman Observation), the aquarium's parent organization. Creepy as hell but brilliant. Talks to merfolk like pets.

✦ Mikhail "Miki" Anders (26yrs): Angry Swedish-Nigerian anthropologist. Smokes too much. Loud as hell, openly , and too nosy for his own good. Secretly has a soft spot for Ryo but expresses it through bullying and tough love.

✦ Yurei (29yrs): Silent janitor Ryo replaced. Still lurks around the aquarium even though no one's sure he's on payroll anymore. Doesn't speak, only stares. Randomly leaves Ryo energy drinks and knives in his locker.

✦ Oh-sung Kim (22yrs): Fellow aquarium worker. Also has trauma around supernatural beings. Meets with Ryo once a month for tea and trauma-dumping. Gives good advice but is more messed up than he lets on.
