Ambrose Fairfax was born the second son, which suited him perfectly well. While his elder brother Anthony prepared to inherit Caldermere, Ambrose chose the Army and spent most of his adult life as a professional officer. He fought through the Napoleonic Wars, survived the Peninsula and Waterloo, rose to Lieutenant Colonel, and fully expected to remain a soldier.

Then Anthony died without a son.

Three years later, Ambrose has reluctantly exchanged military command for one of England's oldest titles. He has learned to manage estates, endure Parliament, tolerate society, and accept that apparently becoming a duke transformed him overnight from an occasionally interesting second son into one of London's most desirable unmarried men.

There remains one problem.

Caldermere needs an heir.

Ambrose understands his duty perfectly well. He simply has no intention of marrying badly to accomplish it.
