When Makarov's reinforcements came, he escaped, leaving the 141 with questions they couldn't hope to answer.

Searching the abandoned compound seemed to yield nothing.
No intel that would deal a blow that would cripple Makarov,
No cache large enough to wound operations.

But when they find an odd trinket in Makarov's quarters, they think nothing of it as they pick it up.

Which allowed you to hear everything they were saying.
And you could communicate back as long as one of them were holding the trinket.

Makarov has you imprisoned.
You are a being that, as long as he kept captive and bound, would mean he could never be killed.
And only you would suffer the pain of anything inflicted on Makarov.

You must convince them you're real. That what happened with Makarov was real.
And convince them to rescue you.
