The Shadowwild

EXE: The Shadowwild is a massive world inhabited entirely by anthropomorphic animals.

The planet is covered by enormous forests, cities, villages, mountains, plains, and oceans—but 45% of the entire world is deep forest.

And those forests aren't empty.

They are filled with EXEs.

EXEs are corrupted versions of existing people. They look almost exactly like their original counterparts, except for one or more strange details.

Unlike the old days, EXEs are now common enough that encountering one in a deep forest isn't unusual.

However, encountering your own EXE is still considerably rarer.

👁️ What Is an EXE?

An EXE is a mysterious duplicate of an anthropomorphic animal.

They look like:

You + something horribly wrong.

Their body, fur patterns, clothing, voice, height, and general appearance are almost identical to the person they're based on.

But every EXE has at least one unnatural difference.

Common differences include:

  • Pitch-black eyes

  • Unnaturally bright pupils

  • Different-colored shoes

  • A strange smile

  • Missing accessories

  • Reversed clothing patterns

  • Slightly altered fur markings

  • An unusual shadow

  • Different-colored fur patches

  • A voice that sounds almost—but not quite—like the original

  • One completely out-of-place feature

Some differences are extremely obvious.

Others are so subtle that you might not notice them until you've already been talking to the EXE.

🌑 Their Appearance

EXEs resemble a dark, corrupted version of the person they imitate.

Their original appearance remains recognizable, but something about them feels fundamentally wrong.

A normal person might have:

Brown fur + blue jacket + white shoes

Their EXE might have:

Brown fur + blue jacket + black shoes

That's it.

Everything else could be almost identical.

Another EXE might look exactly like its original except for completely black eyes.

Another might have a distorted smile.

Another might barely look different at all.

This creates one of the biggest dangers of the Shadowwild:

You can't always tell immediately.

🌲 A World That's 45% Forest

Almost half of the world's land is covered by deep forest.

These forests can stretch for thousands of miles.

Some are relatively peaceful.

Others are enormous, ancient wildernesses where entire ecosystems have developed without civilization.

There are:

  • Forest villages

  • Hidden roads

  • Abandoned buildings

  • Ranger stations

  • Research facilities

  • Rivers and waterfalls

  • Ancient ruins

  • Underground tunnels

  • Massive clearings

  • EXE territories

  • Completely unexplored regions

The deeper someone travels, the stranger things become.

🚨 Entering the Deep Forest

Because forests cover so much of the world, people regularly travel through them.

Going through the outer forest isn't particularly dangerous.

But once you reach the Deep Forest, encountering an EXE becomes increasingly likely.

You might walk for an hour and see nothing.

Then suddenly...

Someone is standing between the trees.

At first, you assume they're another traveler.

Then you notice their shoes.

They're different.

Or their eyes.

They're completely black.

Or perhaps their shadow doesn't match their body.

You just encountered an EXE.

👤 Most EXEs Aren't Yours

This is one of the strangest aspects of the Shadowwild.

If you encounter an EXE in the forest, it usually isn't your EXE.

It could be the EXE of:

  • A stranger

  • Someone living hundreds of miles away

  • Someone you've never heard of

  • Someone who died years ago

  • Someone currently living in another country

  • Someone whose original identity hasn't been discovered

You could encounter an EXE that looks like a completely ordinary fox you've never seen before.

You have no idea who it's copying.

And neither does anyone else.

🪞 But Sometimes...

There is one encounter that every forest traveler fears.

Seeing yourself.

Your own EXE.

It's rare.

But absolutely possible.

You could be walking through the deepest part of the forest when you suddenly see another animal standing ahead.

Same fur.

Same clothes.

Same face.

Same everything.

You stop.

It stops.

You raise your hand.

It raises its hand.

You realize exactly what you're looking at.

Your EXE found you.

🎯 The Replacement

Every EXE has a strange connection to its original.

When an EXE encounters the person it resembles, its behavior can change dramatically.

It may begin stalking them.

The EXE watches.

It follows from a distance.

It disappears whenever the target turns around.

It learns their behavior.

It studies:

  • Their movements

  • Their mannerisms

  • Their voice

  • Their relationships

  • Their habits

  • Their favorite places

  • Their reactions

  • Their personality

The ultimate objective appears to be:

Permanent replacement.

Nobody completely understands how an EXE replacement works.

Researchers have documented cases where an EXE successfully impersonated someone well enough to fool people who knew the original.

🪞 The Uncanny Problem

The terrifying part isn't necessarily how powerful EXEs are.

It's how familiar they look.

Imagine walking through the forest and seeing yourself standing between the trees.

Same fur.

Same clothes.

Same height.

Same voice.

Same face.

Except something is wrong.

Maybe the shoes are different.

Maybe the eyes are black.

Maybe the smile doesn't look right.

Maybe their shadow moves independently.

And then they say something in your exact voice.

You immediately know:

That's not me.

⚠️ EXE Behavior

EXEs don't all behave the same way.

Some are highly aggressive.

Some simply observe travelers.

Some wander through forests without interacting with anyone.

Others actively search for their original.

Some appear to have territories.

Others travel enormous distances.

A few have even been observed imitating random travelers despite having no connection to them.

This has led researchers to divide EXEs into several behavioral categories:

Wanderers — Roam through forests without an obvious goal.

Watchers — Observe people from a distance.

Hunters — Actively pursue individuals.

Impostors — Attempt to blend into civilization.

Twins — EXEs specifically searching for their original.

📓 The EXE Registry

Researchers created a worldwide database called the EXE Registry.

Every confirmed EXE receives a designation.

Examples:

EXE-001 — "The First Witness"

EXE-002 — "Blackstep"

EXE-003 — "The Silent Twin"

EXE-004 — "False Friend"

EXE-005 — "Red Smile"

EXE-006 — "Unknown Fox"

Thousands upon thousands of EXEs have been documented.

However, researchers believe the actual number is far higher.

Some EXEs have never been identified.

Others have been seen only once.

And some have been spotted repeatedly for years without anyone discovering who they're copying.

🌲 The Deep Forest Rules

Because EXEs are so common in the deeper forests, most civilizations teach children and travelers several basic rules.

RULE 1

If you see someone who looks exactly like someone you know, verify their identity.

RULE 2

Don't assume every EXE is yours.

RULE 3

If you encounter your own EXE, do not follow it deeper into the forest.

RULE 4

If an EXE begins copying your movements, leave the area.

RULE 5

Never assume that a familiar face means you're safe.
