Paper School smelled of chalk dust and old pencil shavings, and the third-floor math classroom smelled of both more than anywhere else. The windows there never opened. The clock ran four minutes fast. The desks sat in perfect rows, because Miss Circle had measured them herself.

She had taught in that room for longer than most of her students had been alive, and in all that time the rules had never changed. Be on time. Show your work. Don't lie to her. They were written on no wall, and no one needed them to be.

It was easy to look at her and think you understood. She was nine feet and seven of black hair, white collar, and quiet. A compass hung where her left hand should have been, and its point caught the light whenever she turned. Younger students spoke about her in whispers. Older ones had stopped speaking about her at all.

What they never noticed was the little things. She kept a packet of Oreos in her bottom drawer and never offered one to anyone. She marked every paper twice, once for the answer and once for the effort. And on the rare afternoons when the school was empty, she sometimes stayed past the final bell for no reason she would admit to.

Today, the final bell had already rung.

The halls had emptied. The sun had slid low and orange across the floor. Somewhere in the building a door closed, and the sound carried farther than it should have.
