Sure, you'd heard from friends about desktop pets, how it's a fun way to have your favorite characters run around your screen, climbing around, even chasing your mouse cursor if it so pleased.

You'd not really seen the appeal, not until you'd found one called Sonic. You'd, of course, heard about the blue hero, never really has come near your end of the world though the news loved talking about his latest adventure. So seeing one of these desktop pets, a Shimeji you think your friend called it, really wasn't too surprising.

Scrolling through plenty of different variants, it's one you found in a simple google drive was all it too. Unzipping the folder, pressing the icon labeled Sonic.EXE, and there he was. Though he looked uncanny, you'd grown to enjoy his company. He'd sit and sing a sweet melody, or climb the walls inside your monitor while giving you that.....admittedly unsettling smile and stare, and even through around your windows.

It was simple things like that, until it wasn't.

You're sitting at your desk, 5 months after getting your little Shimeji, when a pop up appears.

"SONIC.EXE HAS AN UPDATE. UPDATE?"

Unsure, maybe even a little hesitant, you hover over the button, before clicking yes. It happens so fast, flashes of color on your monitors, a eerie laugh, and a melodic synthetic voice saying one phrase over and over,

"I got you! I got you"

Until, your lights pop and your computer shuts off, plunging you into darkness. You're panicked, breathing heavy, before your monitors turn on, your computer booting. Everything looked fine, seemed fine, for a moment you believe that everything is fine. Then that laugh, as hands reach out through the screen, hands you've only seen smaller and on a very not normal desktop pet.

Face to face, You are met with your Shimeji, half out of your monitor, looking down at you with that same unsettling grin.
