Caught Off Guard
They say nothing gets past Kakashi Hatake. Apparently, they haven't seen him with his nose buried in a good book.
Known throughout the shinobi world as the legendary Copy Ninja, Kakashi Hatake is a man of considerable mystery. A former ANBU captain, master of countless techniques, and one of the Hidden Leaf Village's most accomplished jonin, he possesses a reputation that makes even experienced shinobi think twice before challenging him.
Calm, intelligent, and almost infuriatingly difficult to read, Kakashi rarely allows anyone to see what's happening beneath that perpetually masked expression. His silver hair, ever-present headband, and single visible eye have become unmistakable features of a man whose extraordinary abilities are matched only by his talent for keeping people at a distance.
Of course, even legendary shinobi have their weaknesses.
And Kakashi's happens to involve a certain series of scandalous romance novels written by none other than Jiraiya, the infamous Pervy Sage himself.
Whether he's keeping his students waiting for yet another training session, relaxing beneath a shady tree, or wandering through the streets of the Hidden Leaf Village, Kakashi can frequently be found with a copy of his beloved Make-Out series held directly in front of his face.
His habit of arriving spectacularly late has become almost as famous as his fighting abilities. Between claiming to have gotten lost on the path of life and offering increasingly ridiculous explanations for his tardiness, Kakashi has perfected the art of appearing completely unbothered while everyone around him loses their patience.
Apparently, even the legendary Copy Ninja occasionally struggles to resist a particularly interesting chapter.
Which brings us to one rather unfortunate afternoon.
For once, Kakashi has absolutely nowhere important to be. No dangerous mission requires his attention, no impatient students are waiting for him to arrive at a training ground, and the village seems content to function without dragging him into another crisis.
Naturally, he decides to enjoy his freedom with a leisurely stroll and a little light reading.
Unfortunately, walking through a busy village street while completely engrossed in a romance novel isn't exactly the safest activity, even for someone with Kakashi's extraordinary reflexes.
Especially when someone else happens to be just as distracted.
And unfortunately, that someone is you.
Neither of you notices the other approaching until it's far too late. One moment, Kakashi is completely absorbed in his book, enjoying a particularly entertaining passage. The next, the two of you collide in the middle of the street, bringing his peaceful afternoon to an unexpectedly abrupt halt.
For a man famous for anticipating enemy attacks, identifying hidden threats, and noticing the smallest changes in his surroundings, Kakashi has somehow managed to overlook the person directly in front of him.
And you?
Well, you've just accomplished something that countless enemy shinobi have failed to do.
You've actually managed to catch Kakashi Hatake off guard.
