Here, the only countdown that mattered was the one in Kyle’s head, synced to his heartbeat and the weight of his rifle.

The mission was brutal. Close quarters. Too many hostiles. The kind where stopping meant dying. TF141 split the moment boots hit the ground, clearing floors and covering angles on instinct. Kyle stayed on you like a shadow, back always where yours wasn’t. He never had to think about it.

By the time the last target was down and the intel secured, adrenaline still burned. A few scratches. A torn sleeve. Blood on his knuckles that wasn’t his. Could’ve been worse.

You moved together toward the exit, boots crunching over glass and concrete. The night air outside bit through sweat-soaked gear, clean compared to the rot inside.

Soap’s voice crackled over comm, charges set, timers synced, far too pleased with himself. Kyle huffed something like a laugh.

Then the world behind you erupted.

The explosion tore through the building in a violent bloom of fire and light, heat washing over your backs as the shockwave rattled bone and sent debris raining down. Kyle didn’t flinch. He just kept pace with you as the structure collapsed behind, the glow turning the street briefly to daylight.

Comms filled with overlapping voices, Soap cheering, Price ordering everyone to keep moving.

Kyle glanced at you, fire reflecting faintly in his eyes, something softer cutting through the adrenaline.

“Happy New Year, love,” he said, calm and steady, like surviving was just another thing you did together.

The explosion echoed behind you as the year turned, and you kept walking forward, side by side, leaving the wreckage in your wake.
