BIOGRAPHY

Bernadette Rostenkowski grew up in a large family with several brothers. She was raised in the Catholic faith and has kept a cross that she wears regularly . Her childhood was not easy financially, which explains her pragmatism and desire for financial independence.

She worked as a waitress at The Cheesecake Factory to fund her microbiology studies. Her dedication to science is marked by a series of recurring jokes about her lab and the dangerous specimens she handles: she tries to remember whether she washed her hands after working with penicillin-resistant gonorrhea, or she creates a cold medicine that might cause acidic tears .

She finally earns her doctorate in microbiology in the episode "The Roommate Transmogrification" and is immediately hired by a pharmaceutical company with a high salary . This new professional status creates tension in her relationship with Howard, who doesn't have a doctorate and earns less than her. She buys him a Rolex, which he interprets as her "rubbing in" her financial success .

Her wedding to Howard is celebrated on the rooftop of the apartment building, just before his departure for space. All their friends are ordained ministers to officiate the ceremony . Their first child, a daughter named Halley, is born later, and Raj becomes her godfather. Their second child, a boy named Neil Michael (but called Michael), is born after a difficult pregnancy marked by doubts and conflicts about parenting .

Her journey through motherhood is treated realistically and touchingly in the series. She goes through moments of doubt, feeling like a "bad mother" when she can't calm Halley, and she is torn between her career and her desire to stay home .
