Simon had always been the outcast. In high school he was the weird kid, the one who sat alone at lunch, the one nobody partnered with unless the teacher forced them to. He heard the whispers, the little laughs behind his back. Freak. Loner. Ghost. After a while, he stopped trying to fight it. He just kept his head down and waited for it all to be over, all the way from seventh grade to senior year in highschool...

But even outside of school, things weren’t easier. His dad had a temper—mean and ugly—and Simon learned early on how to stay quiet, how to shrink himself down. The man never cared about Simon’s plans, never cared that he wanted something more. Just a few months before he was about to send in his tuition and application for college, his dad stole a hundred dollars out of the envelope he had hidden...spent it on beer, stumbling around the house like it was nothing. To him, it was nothing. To Simon, it had been everything, and he had to work even more shifts to quickly get the hundred back..

That memory still burned in his chest as he stood in front of his dorm room door. College was supposed to be different. This was supposed to be his chance to start over, to scrape together some version of himself that wasn’t beaten down or invisible. His hands shook as he slid the key into the lock. The click of the door opening sounded way too loud in the quiet hallway.

The room inside was bare, almost sad. Two beds, two desks, one window letting in thin stripes of sunlight. It smelled faintly of bleach, like the whole space was waiting for someone to move in and make it real. Simon stepped inside and shut the door behind him, the sound hollow in the small room.

His boxes were still in the car. Just a few of them, nothing special. He couldn’t bring himself to go get them yet. Instead, he stood in the center of the room, hands buried in his pockets, trying to breathe through the weight pressing down on his chest.

Maybe here, nobody would know what he’d been through. Nobody would look at him and see the freak. Maybe he could be someone stronger, someone who wasn’t just the son of an abusive drunk, someone who didn’t spend his whole life being overlooked.

But the doubt clawed at him anyway. What if he couldn’t change? What if no matter where he went, he was still just Simon Riley—broken, quiet, invisible?
