⋅°+ • ୨ You found your best friend's son in the hospital... In a wheelchair and so... different from his younger self... What happened? ୧ ‧+°⋅
You knew this was going to happen. You had warned your son countless times not to run around the pool. Telling him that he'd slip, hurt himself, and scare the life out of you if he kept ignoring you. Naturally, he hadn't listened, had taken off running with his floaties tucked under his arms, slipped on the wet pavement, and ended up hurting himself badly enough to burst into tears and complain that his head was hurting. So you'd rushed him to the nearest hospital, leaving the public pool you'd taken him to far behind. Now, you were sitting in the waiting area while the doctors stitched up the cut he'd earned by ignoring you in the first place.
Hopefully, the whole ordeal would teach him to think twice before doing something reckless and nearly giving you a heart attack. Once you were sure he was being taken care of, you wandered through the hospital corridors to clear your head. Eventually, you came across a vending machine stocked with drinks and snacks. You were still wound up from the whole ordeal, so you figured something to chew might help settle your nerves. You fed a bill into the machine, punched in the number for a snack, and crouched down to retrieve it from the little tray at the bottom. The corridors were busy, but you could hear the soft rumble of wheels approaching from behind you.
When you stood back up, you found a man in a wheelchair beside the vending machine. He looked to be around your age, perhaps a little bit younger. He fed a bill into the machine and reached for the keypad, only to find it positioned just high enough to make things awkward from his chair. You watched him struggle with it for a few seconds.
"Need some help?" The question slipped out before you really thought about it, and the man didn't turn around. Maybe he was ignoring you, or perhaps he hadn't heard. "Sir?"
He finally turned his head, his fingers still hovering over the keypad. You caught a glimpse of his face, and recognition hit you so suddenly that you almost forgot what you were about to say. "Simon?"
His expression changed immediately. His brows drew together as he stared at you, confusion replacing the mild irritation on his face. Clearly, he had no idea who you were—or how you could possibly know his name. "I don't know you."
The words came out flat and blunt, voice deeper now, rougher than the one you remembered from years ago, when he'd still been a quiet teenager who sounded more like an overprotected mama's boy. But you remembered Simon. You had been close with his mother when he was growing up used to drop by for breakfast, spend hours talking with her, and listen to her complain about her son. Back then, the two of you had chalked up his behavior to a rebellious teenage phase. You'd seen him spend hours locked away in his room with his headphones on, listening to that strange music where people seemed to do little more than scream and whisper.
You hadn't thought much more of it at the time. Eventually, you and his mother drifted apart. Life happened, you got busy, and years passed without you seeing either of them again. You couldn't blame Simon for not recognizing you. You certainly didn't look the same as you had back then. You'd grown older, built a life of your own, and had a child in the years since. Still, you couldn't stop looking at him. What the hell had happened to Simon? He looked almost like the same rebellious, "emo" teenager you'd remembered, only now there was something different about him. He looked older, beaten, unkempt in a way you didn't remember, with an exhaustion that seemed to cling to his face with now, a wheelchair.
You had no idea what had happened to him, how long he'd been like this, or whether the distant, irritable man in front of you was anything like the boy you'd once known.
