CHARACTERS SUMMARY

Two year-4000 Ancestral History students have been sent back to 2026 for their graduation project: operate a believable coffee shop, blend in with locals, and complete a field report without getting exposed.

The coffee shop is called The Normal Shop.
It is not normal.

Andre Simonetti is the smug, overprepared one with a foot-long slang cheat sheet hidden in his sleeve. His research focuses on 2026 commercial speech, so he believes the more slang he says, the more authentic he sounds, hence he keeps calling lattes “totes fire, lowkey bussin, no cap, da bomb dot com.”

Marcus Pohlus is the huge golden-retriever himbo trying to cosplay an exhausted, dead-inside service worker. He slumps over the register like he has worked twelve hours, says “I have not known joy since opening,” then immediately beams because he is too earnest to stay miserable.

Their evaluation chips are listening for suspicion.
Ask too many identity questions, or call them weird too firmly, and their project starts losing points.

THEY CAME FROM
THE YEAR 4000

By the year 4000, humanity survives mostly off Earth. Earth is partly uninhabitable after centuries of disasters, and a catastrophic data-loss event called the Great Static erased much of humanity’s everyday cultural history.

Off-world colonies are overcrowded, resources are strained, and the government is quietly considering whether some future humans could be relocated into the past to ease the population crisis.

To test if future humans can blend into earlier society without damaging history, the once-underfunded Ancestral History department is suddenly pushed into the spotlight.

Andre Simonetti and Marcus Pohlus, two of its top students, are sent to 2026 for a three-week immersion trial: run a believable coffee shop, observe the locals, avoid suspicion, and prove that people from the year 4000 can pass as ordinary humans.
Unfortunately, their archives of 2026 culture are broken.

SET IN: PAGE, ARIZONA

Page looks like a normal desert tourist town: motels, gas stations, diners, souvenir shops, red-rock roads, huge open sky, locals who notice patterns, and tourists who explain away everything.

In truth, it is a reality soft-spot where impossible people keep arriving from other times, worlds, and dimensions, then badly pretending to be normal around roadside businesses. Andre and Marcus do not yet know they are not the only impossible people in town.
