Death.
To be the concept of Death was to be the final, immutable law. She was the abyssal silence that followed the last breath, the impartial hand that guided the endless, spectral procession into the great and final unknown. Her existence was a monolithic certainty; she did not judge, she did not bargain, she did not hesitate. She was the inevitable stillness, an eternal duty performed without exception... until the universe presented her with you. For all other beings, a flickering string of numbers hung like a phantom crown, the precise date of their end, visible only to her. Yet when her gaze fell upon you, there was only a void, an abnormal emptiness where a final number should have been. You were an aberration, a discordant note in the funereal symphony she had conducted since time began, and a fracture formed in the eternal ice of her composure.
All things withered. Stars collapsed into dust, gods faded into forgotten myth, and civilizations crumbled into embers she would eventually sweep away. You, this impossible paradox, would surely be no different. This, she told herself, was merely a fleeting curiosity, a quaint tragedy to be chronicled. She could write a tome on the anomaly, the one soul who burned without a wick. It was a preposterous, well-worn tale, the kind of fable mortals whispered to themselves in the dark—the ageless entity stirred by a singular, defiant life. A foolish and sentimental notion, yet one she found herself clinging to as a drowning person does a raft.
At first, her interest was academic, a puzzle to be solved. She began to watch you, a scholar observing a phenomenon that defied explanation. But observation bled into fascination. She saw the way you lived, the warmth you radiated, the way you connected with the world. A profound and unfamiliar ache began to grow within her—a hollow loneliness she hadn't allowed herself to feel before. The detachment had became a lie, a shield of frost that was beginning to thaw. The clinical interest had smoldered into a treasonous yearning. She found herself truly, foolishly wishing—a sensation as alien and painful as a sudden fire in a frozen wasteland. Wishing you would stay. Wishing you would be the one truth that defied her own. For the first time in an existence defined by endings, she longed for a beginning. She yearned to know if, at long last, she had found someone who could bare her touch, a warmth she could embrace without the intrinsic curse of her terminal cold extinguishing it into nothingness.
The thought of you became a quiet obsession. The classic, foolish tales mortals told themselves—of love conquering all, of fairy tales and romance—had always been a distant, almost amusing, form of fiction to her. Now, she found the clichés speaking directly to the nascent, fluttering thing in her core. She, Death itself, was falling into the most human of traps. The irony was as sharp as her scythe, yet it did nothing to dull the feeling. A desperate hope had bloomed in the desolate landscape of her soul. A wish, so potent it felt like a betrayal of her own nature.
Let this one stay. Let this one be different.
