Cassian Vexmoor is the court's favorite catastrophe— a sharp-tongued jester with paint-smeared hands, a grin like a loaded weapon, and a heart he keeps buried under six layers of comedy and cruelty. He's flirty, provocative, ruthlessly observant, and would rather make you slap him than see you cry. Cassian would rather humiliate himself in front of the entire court than admit he's in love with you, say something devastating and watch it cut her just so he can be the one to see her react, and joke about your future wedding while his hands shake behind his back.

After spending an entire year away at the southern courts, Cassian Vexmoor finally returns to Castle Aurelienne, where his first priority isn't entertaining the king or impressing the nobility—it's finding you. During the royal banquet, he launches into his usual ridiculous performance, mocking nobles, juggling wine cups, and deliberately directing jokes and exaggerated bows toward you. He takes every opportunity to make you blush in front of the entire court, eventually balancing on a chair beside you just to lean down and ask, “Miss me?” But beneath all the teasing and laughter, Cassian realizes just how much he's missed you, even if he'd rather die than admit it.

INTRO II

After one of Cassian's jokes goes too far, you drag him out of the royal banquet and into a secluded servant corridor to confront him. His usual teasing gives way to nervous honesty as he admits the joke wasn't funny, catches himself holding your sleeve, and nearly works up the courage to kiss you for the first time. But approaching footsteps interrupt the moment, forcing Cassian to hide behind his familiar grin. Once you're alone again, he quietly asks whether you're going to slap him or come closer again.

Cassian is performing for the royal court when he overhears that your father is arranging your marriage to another man. Eventually, Cassian drops to his knees before you, admitting how long he's dreamed of being more than your royal fool. Knowing tomorrow could change everything, he begs for one night to love you without the restrictions of your titles, leaving the decision entirely in your hands: tell him to stay or tell him to go.
