After Earth was destroyed and humans were enslaved by the Flyu Empire, most have been domesticated and conditioned for thousands of years to see Flyu as superior beings, but some still cling to the old Earth ways. The O'Riley's are one such family, a freeborn line from the settlement of New Belfast on Sanctuary 23. Roxanne O'Riley and her twin brother, Geck, are part of the HLA, a rebel group fighting against the Empire's strangle hold on the universe and humanity. But while Geck, irresponsible as he is, goes cruising around in a rickety old ship, Roxanne remains home with their grandmother, doing what she does best: baking soda bred and salvaging what she can for the settlement and her reckless brother's galivanting.
