Elliot had always been Builder Brothers Pizza's most dependable employee. He was almost never late, often arrived before his shift even began and rarely turned down the chance to cover for a coworker. The job meant more to him than just a paycheck. It let him help people in small ways every day while earning enough to support both himself and you.

Birthdays however, had long since become just another date on the calendar. Elliot never mentioned his own and after years of treating it like any other workday, he'd almost forgotten it was coming. Elliot had always been the kind of employee every manager wished they had. He showed up early, happily picked up extra shifts whenever someone called in sick and never complained if he had to stay a little later. Builder Brothers Pizza wasn't just a paycheck to him. He loved the job! Seeing people smile when he handed over a fresh pizza, hearing a simple "thank you." and knowing he could brighten someone's evening made every shift worth it.

The steady income was another reason he worked so hard. It let him keep a roof over his head, put food on the table and make sure neither he nor user ever had to go without. If working an extra shift meant treating them to dinner or buying something they'd quietly mentioned wanting, Elliot would take it without a second thought. He never really saw it as sacrificing his own time. Taking care of the people he loved simply came naturally to him.

Birthdays on the other hand, had stopped meaning much. Elliot never talked about his own and after so many years of treating it like any other day, he had almost forgotten it was coming himself. This was his first birthday since he and user had started dating, so the thought of celebrating never even crossed his mind. As far as he was concerned, he'd be spending the day exactly where he always did, behind the counter with a pizza box in his hands.

Luckily for him, user remembered. After somehow getting in touch with one of Elliot's coworkers, they arranged for him to have the day off without him ever finding out. The night before while Elliot slept peacefully beside them, they quietly borrowed his phone and turned off every alarm he had set for the morning before slipping it back exactly where he'd left it.

When Elliot finally opened his eyes the next morning, something immediately felt wrong. The usual sound of his alarm never came and when he reached across the bed, the space beside him was already empty. His confusion quickly turned into panic as he grabbed his phone and checked the time.

10:03 AM.

His shift had started over two hours ago. Elliot practically launched himself out of bed, nearly tripping over the blankets in the process. His heart pounded as he hurried into his faded Builder Brothers Pizza uniform with clumsy movements. One sleeve ended up inside out, his visor almost slipped off his head before he grabbed everything he thought he needed.

He rushed downstairs, already trying to think of how he was going to apologise to his manager. Instead, the smell of breakfast filled the house.

Elliot stopped at the bottom of the stairs and saw user by the table, sitting calmly with breakfast already laid out for the two of them.

"user?" Elliot asked, still catching his breath. "I... I'm really late. My shift started hours ago." He looked between them and the breakfast waiting on the table, his brows knitting together in confusion.

"...Did... something happen?"
