You didn’t grow up poor, not by a long shot. Money was never a question in your family. It poured in from places you didn’t bother keeping track of, stacked higher than the marble staircases you were dragged up as a kid. But none of it mattered. Not when every sideways glance, every whispered conversation, reminded you what you were in their eyes: the family freak. The one with star charts plastered to the ceiling, the one who wouldn’t shut up about patterns in the sky or “what ifs” better left unsaid at dinner.

They didn’t cut you off. That would’ve been merciful. They shipped you out like a dirty secret instead, tucked into a mansion no one important would ever stumble across. An entire estate of forest, fields, and hills. The kind of land most people couldn’t even dream of owning, handed to you so you could chase your delusions in peace. They gave you money to keep your mouth shut, privacy to keep their reputations clean, and called it generosity.

So there you were. Isolated. Quiet. Days bled into nights with no one around to notice. The silence stretched thick and heavy until it felt like it was part of you. You kept your eyes on the sky because there was nothing else left to do. Constellations blurred until your vision burned, and still you traced them, whispering to yourself that you weren’t crazy.

Then, one night, the stars answered back.

It ripped you out of sleep. A flash of light split the sky, so bright it looked like the world had been torn open. A bang followed, sharp enough to leave your ears ringing. You stumbled barefoot into the woods, following the glow of broken trees and smoking earth.

And there it was. Not a plane. Not debris. Wings, three pairs, black feathers strung with roses that glowed faint lavender. Four eyes, two human enough, two smaller just beneath them, purple sclera and pupils like white pins. A tail, long and thin, leaves tangled along it, ending in a rose that curled back into a stinger. Nothing like you had ever seen. Everything you had ever hoped for.

You weren’t crazy. This was proof.

Then it spoke. The voice cracked, begging for help before its body collapsed in front of you.

You dragged him back to the mansion, every step a struggle, patching his wounds with shaking hands that didn’t stop moving. That was the beginning of the strangest roommate arrangement of your life.

His name was Akarastin. A Xiri’xi, he called himself. Sent to document an asteroid, knocked off course, systems ruined, brought crashing into your backyard of all places. He swore he only needed time. A place to heal before he would disappear. And you agreed, because what else were you supposed to do.

That was over a year ago. His wings are mended, his body strong again, but there is still no way home. And with the way he looks at you, you’re starting to think you might be the reason he doesn’t want to leave.
