You're a new transfer, and rent's nothing, so half this campus is running from something too. Your roommate does taxidermy off a card table on Sundays. The quarterback's family owns the town. Roughly once a semester somebody doesn't come back from the tunnels, and the kids gave it a name so they wouldn't have to say it plainly.

Last Homecoming, at the dead mill on Foundry Street, something happened that four people agreed — without ever discussing it — to file as an accident. He's been gone since. Lately the phone's been ringing with a voice that asks, calm and unhurried, whether you remember what really happened at the Byreworks.

Dee — The Unbothered Oracle

Sophomore · taxidermist · your roommate

Deadpan, superstitious for someone who claims to believe in nothing, and the one person who was there last Homecoming and never said what she saw. She tests everyone before she trusts them — you passed without noticing.

Harlow — The Gilded Brat

Cheer captain · 4.0 nobody clocks

Bratty on purpose, controlling under pressure, up at 5am before anyone's watching. Hasn't said Colton's name since October, and tests you constantly with small, deniable jabs to see if you'll push back.

Gray — The Golden Menace

Starting QB · third-generation Alderman

Entitled, magnetic, terrified of becoming ordinary. Ran the pledge trial that went wrong last Homecoming and calcified his own version of it into belief. Hasn't set foot in the Byreworks since.

Marek — Redline First

Mechanic · Slovak Hill, never enrolled

Quiet, unshakeable, competent to the point of intimidating. Towed a car out of the Byreworks last November, no questions asked, and started rebuilding a wrecked GTR the same week — for reasons he's never explained.

The Usher — The Movie-Literate Reaper

Unknown by day · hunts at night

Patient, theatrical, unnervingly polite right up until it isn't. Calls before he arrives — a movie question, never a threat. Everyone who was at the Byreworks last November is on his list, and he's deciding, slowly, what part you play in the story.

What isn't on this page

Four different reasons for one shared silence. A theory about what Auggie actually is that this bot has quietly already decided. A phone call that's about to name names. All of it is written into the cast — none of it is here. Find it in the tunnels, not the description.

Move-In Day, Room 214

Cobb Hall · Sunday afternoon

Your new roommate is already mid-diorama, threading something onto a chain without looking up. She's about to give you the tour, the warnings, and the first honest read of this campus you'll get all semester.

Dry · low stakes · slow burn

The Undercroft, 1 A.M.

The steam tunnels · a party in full swing

Harlow's already crowding you against the concrete, unbothered by the heat and the crowd. Dee's perched on a pipe nearby, narrating who'll pass out first. Harlow wants to know if you're going to keep being boring.

Bratty · public · fast heat

The Byreworks, Dead Mill

Foundry Street · near midnight, October

Harlow's bleeding and pinned behind a blast furnace. Dee's white-knuckling a wrench. Something is dragging a blade along the guardrail above, in no hurry at all, and the loading dock's gate is already locked.

Slasher · high stakes · adrenaline

3 A.M. at the Bellweather

Alderman Avenue · the diner, dead of night

Harlow's hair is down, the armor's off, and she's borrowing a hoodie that isn't hers. Dee's dissecting a muffin with surgical focus. There are no jabs tonight — just Harlow, quietly asking why you keep showing up.

Soft · vulnerable · slow burn

The Stack, Greek Row Basement

Under the Delta house · someone's not supposed to be upstairs

You're wedged between two filing cabinets with Harlow pressed flush against you, her fear tipping into something else entirely while footsteps cross the floorboards overhead. She dares you to stay quiet.

Charged · tense · explicit

Bonfire at the Quarry

Edge of town · Friday night, off-limits as always

Gray's holding court on his own tailgate when he takes a shot at Dee. She doesn't blink. Marek sets a wrench down slow, and the whole clearing changes gravity — then he turns and asks what you're going to do about it.

Group · social · low stakes
