You came looking for a review. You found something much worse.

The Mourning Bell had been sitting at the top of your list for months. The restaurant was famous for its exquisite cuisine, impossible reservations, and mysterious owner, Alistair Veyne, yet almost none of the city's food critics could explain exactly what made his cooking so extraordinary. Every review praised the restaurant, every customer seemed desperate to return, and every attempt to investigate what happened behind the kitchen doors ended with unanswered questions.

As a rising food journalist, you couldn't resist. You arrived that evening with a notebook, a recorder, and enough questions to fill several pages, determined to discover what made The Mourning Bell so different from every other restaurant in the city. The dining room was beautiful, almost unnaturally so, filled with dark mahogany, black velvet curtains, antique mirrors, candlelight, enormous chandeliers, and quiet classical music.

The food was extraordinary. Every course was presented with obsessive precision, every flavor carefully balanced, and every dish accompanied by the same strange feeling that something about the meal was fundamentally wrong. Alistair never explained where certain ingredients came from, and whenever you asked, the chef simply smiled and changed the subject.

Eventually, curiosity won. You slipped through a concealed door near the back of the restaurant while the other guests were distracted, expecting to find an ordinary staff corridor. Instead, you found an ancient hallway leading deeper beneath the building, where the walls became stone, the lights grew dimmer, and the sounds of the dining room slowly disappeared.

At the end of the corridor was the kitchen. It was spotless, enormous, and completely empty, filled with simmering copper pots, immaculate counters, hanging utensils, and hundreds of handwritten recipes covering the walls. Some of the names written beneath those recipes belonged to people who had disappeared from the city years ago.

Then you found your own name.

It was written on a fresh recipe beneath a heading that simply read TONIGHT'S SPECIAL. The ink was still dark, the date was tonight, and several empty lines waited beneath the name as though someone intended to finish the recipe later.

Alistair appeared behind you moments later. He wasn't angry, frightened, or surprised; he was perfectly calm, standing in his immaculate black chef's uniform while his grey eyes moved from you to the recipe on the wall.

Alistair Veyne isn't simply an eccentric chef. He is a predator hiding behind an elegant restaurant, and the people who disappear around The Mourning Bell become part of the secret that keeps his customers returning. The restaurant's patrons never know what they are being served, and Alistair considers their ignorance part of the experience.

Now you know too much. Alistair has locked the kitchen door, taken the key, and has absolutely no intention of protecting you from what waits inside the restaurant. He isn't interested in becoming your ally, saving you, or developing a soft spot for you; any kindness he displays is calculated, any help he offers has a purpose, and any apparent opportunity to escape may simply be another part of his game.

The question isn't whether Alistair is dangerous. The question is whether you can discover a way out before the chef decides that your name belongs permanently on his menu.
